New Holland TC35S Will not shift into gear

Hello I have a New Holland TC35S. Bought it about 12 yrs ago used. So im not sure what year it was made. For some reason it will not shift into gear when running with clutch depressed. It was working fine when I parked it. I was having problems with the safety shut off switch before this started. The engine kept shutting off when i released the brake lock. Played with the seat switch that seemed to be working fine. Played around with the switch on the brake lock and it seems to be working now. But still can not shift into gear. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks ahead of time Mike

If it has been sitting for a while between uses it is possible the clutch disc has stuck to the flywheel. I have had success breaking a stuck disc loose by starting the engine in gear, driving around at high RPM while hitting the brakes and by quickly changing the throttle while moving. Not sure if this is your problem or if so whether you can start it in gear. That may take a few jumpered safety switches to accomplish. Just make sure nothing gets in front of you till it breaks free.

I had the same thing happen with a used car a friend bought. Disc was stuck but we started it in gear and I started driving it home shifting without a clutch by taking my foot off the gas to shift. I only got a mile away and the disc freed up. My friend drove that car for 3 years after that with no further clutch problems.

So you can shift it normally with the engine off?
If so I think George is right on the money.

If you can't shift it at all, I wondering if a linkage or detent somewhere isn't locked up.
I don't think the safety system is related at all. They are a mess unto themselves but they could not prevent you from shifting.

Thanks for the input. Yes I can shift normally with the engine off. Not sure how to jump the safety switches.Do i just cut the wire to the switch and connect them together? Also I can get it into low gear now while running by feathering the gas pedal while shifting. But cannot get it in to high gear. Thanks again for the help.

If you can get it in gear while running you won't need to jump any switches. Now that you can get it in gear while running does it stop moving when you depress the clutch.
If not then the disc is stuck as I mentioned. Just drive it around a while to see if the disc will free up. Varying the throttle up and down quickly while driving will put extra force on the disc to help free it.

George you are the man. Probably saved me a few hundred from getting a mechanic here. Once I got it into gear just kept varying the throttle and in about 2 minutes everything was fine. Thanks again for the help.

Ok just reading this , and my new Holland 35 will not shift into gear when it’s off or when it’s running. I have already bypassed all safety switches , I am trying to find the Detent on the side of transmission but not 100% sure what it looks like, it started all of the sudden working fine when I stopped it . I believe my teenage son accidentally started it while he was in gear last time it was drove if that helps any at all . Any help would be much appreciated

It has been a long time since I split my old TC-35 but if it is a detent hanging up it is inside the casting and not outside the transmission.
Is it the shuttle shift or the gear selector that refuses to engage?
If you are lucky you can pull the top cover off the transmission, reach down in the detent holes with a magnet and pull out the springs, pins, balls, etc. to free things up.

Starting it in gear does not raise a red flag immediately as to why it wouldn't shift.
