New Holland motor oil

I have a 2004 TN65D and need to get oil for the next oil change. My local dealer seems to have stopped stocking the NH oil in 5 gallon buckets. He now has only quarts or cases of 15w40 quarts. He told me it was $72.00 a case! Thats $6.00 a quart! Is this the going price for NH motor oil or am I getting ripped off? I think the last 5 gallon bucket of NH motor oil was around $75.00 a year or two ago!

I just bought oil yesterday at my NH dealer-5 gallon bucket of 15w40 NH Ambra was $76 and some change = 3.80 qt.

I paid $69 for a 5 gallon pail of G134 Ambra hydraulic fluid and the 2.5 gallon size was $38.90 each.

Maybe they quoted it wrong??

NH engine oil is not "magic." They don't make it, it's made for them. It's just a good quality engine oil that's rated for diesel service. I have 3 diesel tractors and 2 diesel trucks. I buy Exxon XD-3 or Mobil Delvac 1300 by the drum from a local jobber. With tax, it works out to less than $2 per quart.

I keep the empty drum and use it to store my used oil. When it gets full, I take it to a local oil change shop where it will be picked up for recycling. (the oil shops are paid for their used oil, so they like it too)

If you have no need for 55 gallons of engine oil at a time, the fuel jobbers also sell it in 5 gallon buckets, or cases of 4 one gallon jugs. However, it does cost more in the smaller containers. Another option is to split a drum with some of your family or neighbors. They might appreciate some $8 per gallon oil too. :thumbsup:

My dealer told me that the NH Mastergold was the same oil as Ambra made for Case, different label. Case and NH are now same company. He said I don't need the 134 hydraulic 5 gal for $78- can use a $48 5 gal hydro oil and put in a bottle of drygas.

Like everyone else said, you can use any oil that is rated for diesel engines. I have always used the New Holland/Case Ambra oil. If you buy another oil, I would make sure it meets (or closely meets) Ambra oil specs. I am not sure I would put in hydro oil that required a bottle of dry gas, but that is up to you.

My NH dealer has stopped using generic hydraulic oil in tractors they repair or change fluids in. Too many people have come back over the years and said the tractor just never seemed to have the same performance after the fluid change. It worked ok but maybe it was slower, slightly jerkier or more noise etc. They still sell the generic brand for DIY or for other tractors brands walk in's but try to persuade people to use the Ambra in their NH tractors.

Thanks for everyones help! My local dealer is the high profit low volume type of dealer. When I bought my tractor I priced it out at several NH dealers. One dealers price was $2,000.00 cheaper(50 miles away from me) I went to the closer dealer(12 miles away) and asked if he could at least come close to matching the other dealers price. He said no, he had to make a certain % of profit and he could not come down any from his $2,000.00 higher price! Neither dealer had the tractor I priced on the lot, so both had to order it or get it from somewhere else. Amazing! To answer sweeps question, no, the price of $72.00 for 12 quarts of motor oil was accurate! I will look elsewhere.
