New Holland 345D
Hello to all. I've come to this website because I've inherited the maintenance of a New Holland 345D. At some point in the past there was a starting problem. As a result, much of the wiring was butchered. I have managed to repair most of it but some problems remain. The electrical diagrams I've found are useless. Any help would be appreciated.

What are the problems? You can probably solve most with a test light and tracing/replacing the wires from start to finish.

Welcome to TractorByNet and greetings. From Tennessee. Richard Petty says to take a BC powder for that headache. As for your electrical woes. Do yourself a favor and purchase the service manual for your specific tractor. They may ever have a electrical edition. I've learned in the past when repairing wiring to solder and use shrink wrap over the repaired area. The dealer would probably want to replace the entire wiring harness. With the proper manuals and a good multi meter and maybe some help, you should be able to get the old girl running like new again. We have a Ford New Holland forum area when you get started, will help keep your compass in the right direction. Good luck and welcome. -robert

The immediate problem is that there is a slow drain on the battery. Over the course of 3 days without use, the battery will drop from 12.6 vdc to less than 10.5vdc. The battery was fully charged when I removed it from the loader and it sat unconnected for 4 days. When I went to put it back in, it still metered at 12.6vdc. I know for sure that there are a couple of cut-up wires that I need to trace out and determine what they are. I was hoping to see a schematic before I have to remove a hundred other things to chase them down.

The easiest way I know to find a draw in a system is this - remove the positive battery cable from the battery. Make sure all switches are OFF. Attach a voltmeter(pos lead to battery post, neg lead to cable clamp). If there is a draw in the system, there will be a voltage reading at this point. The greater the voltage, the greater the path for current flow. Start with the charging system and disconnect or unplug wires and connecters one at a time. When you find the problem circuit, the voltage reading will drop to zero. The charging system, flasher systems, printed circuit safety modules, any systems that are "battery live" should be checked first. Keep disconnecting circuits and eventually you will find the problem. When the meter hits zero, start at the beginning and hook everything back up in the same sequence until the reading comes back. It may come quickly. it may take a while, but it works. Wiring schematics may help in correcting the problem once it's located, but probably won't be necessary to find it.

Does the tractor have a generator or alternator. The alternator could be wired wrong and cause a small amp draw on the battery.

Welcome to TractorByNet!

I moved your thread to the New Holland Owning & Operating forum. :)

If it's running ok and you can't figure out the short, I would suggest hooking up a trickle charger to the battery when you get through using it and then it will be ready next time you need it. That's only if you can't figure out the problem. Or unhook the neg. terminal.

If the alternator is not wired correctly. Yes there will be a low amp leaching draw on the battery. Pull the alternator and have it tested to make sure all the diods are ok. If it doesn't have diodes and used an external regulator would be another source to checkout. It would be a big benefit to have a wiring schematic while tracing circuits to validate circuits.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Hopefully I can get to them soon.
