New Holland Haybine cutting head springs

Ok, So I took the springs off the cutting head in order to rebuild the main support bar. I looked at the manual and it doesn't show how to re-attach the springs. They're about 6" from the threaded bolts and I can't figure out how to streatch them back. Any ideas on this? Ed

What model haybine? For example, on a 479, when you disconnect the control arms (mine broke on 1 side), you can back out the spring tensioner until its loose. Then set the lower pin in and start tightening. To get the control arms back in place, I used a bottle jack to move the header back into position (which tensions the springs even more).

It's similar in build to the Hew Holland 1469. There are two large cutting head float springs on either side. When I was taking them off, the cutting head was in the lowered position and the springs had tension on them all the way to the end of theadjusting bolt, and then some.

Jack the header up against the stops.

pick up the header with the hydraulics. Place a block under the header near the tongue, lower head back down. There should be enough "slack" to get the inside spring hooked up. Repeat for other spring, but place block on the outside edge of the header. (Opposite end from the first time you blocked it.)
