Let me first say hello, I have been reading this forum for some time.

I have a 2000, new holland 2120, manual trans and I am looking for some ideas of what may be wrong with it.

The tractor is stuck in a high forward gear, I can not move the gear shifter lever. The clutch works, but I can not shift it into any gears.

This happened about eight months before, the only difference was it was stuck in a high forward gear, but the clutch did not work. I had to turn the key off to stop it.

I took it to the repair shop the first time and they just removed the transmission cover plate and got it out of gear and back into neutral.

Any ideas?

lube the linkage for shifting including pivots and bushing where it passes thru a casting.. perhaps try rocking tractor while having someone try to shift her out. is it a 4wd model? is 4wd disengaged?

Additionally the shifter rods have a detent mechanism to keep rod from flopping around. There is a spring and a ball that keeps in place. I had a post before about it with my 1700. I dug it up and have a link for you here. I hope it helps you as the concept is universal.

By the way, welcome to TBN Blue:)

I checked the CNH website and #49 & #48 are the detent spring and ball to keep the shifter in place. You might look at the pdf below. That is for a 4 speed 2120 transmission.

I occasionally have the same issue with my 1910 which is similar. You can remove the top cover and put it back into neutral, BEFORE you remove the cover remove the I believe 4 bolts in the center portion of the cover, these hold pressure when tight on the spings and in turn on the detent ball. I spent several hours fishing the detent balls out of the transmission by missing this step.
Good luck! After looking at the post above the 2110 looks a little different from mine in the diagram.

Bill,

on my 1700, I take bolts off the cover that holds the detent spring and ball, I then take the spring out and finally the cover. Detent ball just stays put and would never have to fish them out of transmission. The cover should never come off before taking the pressure off of the spring first and removing them.

JC Tell that to my detent ball, only one jumped out. I slide the slider into the neutral position and pop went the weasel!! It's nice when things go by the book, wish that had been my luck. HaHa

Bill,

Any relationship with the ole Murphy guy? He and I go ways back. Some times I think if it were not for the bad luck, I would not have any luck at all:D I tell you, I tried and tried to take the detent balls off using strong magnet, a suction cup device and could not take the ball out. I Think the tolerance between hole dia and ball dia is very close. I forgot to test out if I can push out the ball thru the hole from tthe bottom when I had a cover off. My manual says to take the balls out from the top... I don't think it is possible.

JC,

Murphy, hmmm rings a bell, sometimes you just can't win for nothing! My detent balls would jump pretty good, run the fork back and forth on the rail and pop, pop. Always a posibility that someone replaced mine with the incorrect ones at one point in its life?
