New Holland 1925
Hello,

I recently purchased a HST 1925 tractor with 7308 loader. The tractor did not come with any operators manuals but the operation and controls seems pretty straight forward and everything works.

Before putting it to work I am changing all the fluids and filters.

When I went to change the hydraulic and HST filters I noticed the fluid smelled a lot like a hypoid gear oil (sulfur smell) but was not especially thick like you would expect gear oil to be but thicker than just hydraulic oil should be. This caught me by surprise because the three oil service points on the front axle appeared to be straight up hydraulic oil based on the feel and smell test.
I am also suspicious because the replacement hydraulic fluid I bought from TSC it says it meets the New Holland 134 spec but it does not smell like the fluid that's currently in the tractor.

For this I have a couple questions
1) Do the hydraulic and HST share the same fluid? Filled from behind the drivers seat?
2) Assuming they share the same fluid, what type of fluid is correct? NH134 hydraulic oil?
3) Does the New Holland factory oil have a distinct gear oil smell?

Being that I don't know the service history of the tractor I can image several reasons why the oil smells and feels this way.
1) This is a normal condition for the factory oil?
2) The previous owner added some gear oil into hydraulic system by mistake.
3) Perhaps there is a required mixing ratio of hydraulic fluid and some type of hypoid gear oil in a shared system?

- > Going forward I am leaning toward refilling with the correct spec hydraulic oil, (pretty sure it should be NH134) but I want a sounding board to bounce this off of frist.

Additionally on the loader one of the lift cylinders has a leak and I am going to replace the seals.
When I looked for replacement seals on the New Holland site it listed two types of cylinders 1) Schwartz 2) Ognibene
I would like to order the parts before I disassemble it.

How can one identify which cylinder type is on the tractor?
Please see pictures of both the lift cylinder and the bucket cylinder.

Any help / advise is appreciated

Thanks

I have a 1925 also as far as question 1 yes and the yellow plug is the fill question 2 I am not at my shop cant remember question 3 not really

As far as the cylinder I dont have a clue .

There are 2 hydraulic filters , one behind the right rear wheel and one on the driver side by the engine .

Your fuel filter is different than mine , I like yours better

How many hours on the machine?

Use New Holland 134 hydraulic oil everywhere except the radiator & crankcase. Do not use gear lube anywhere in your new tractor.

Transmission/hydraulics and rear axle are a common sump with a single fill point, single dipstick and several drains.

Look carefully at the two styles of cylinder construction and figure out which you have. The difference is in the gland construction.

You can buy downloads or hard copies of operators and service manuals here:

There is no shame in buying an op manual for your tractor and maybe even your loader.

I had a NH 1925 and I really liked it. Bought an owners manual on ebay. I only use New Holland 134G in my NH tractors. could probably get by cheaper with generic oil, but figure why risk it for the little bit of extra cost. This way I am sure it is the right oil with the right additives.

Sound advice about the operators manual, I will shop around and see what I can find

Thanks for the feedback I am going to drain and refill the hydraulic system with 134 spec oil and new filters. After 10 or 20 hours I'll change it again so its got a good flush on the system.

As for the loader it seems to me that the lift cylinders are Oginbene and the bucket cylinders are Schwartz. That combination seems strange but it possible some parts have been replaced before in its previous life.
I think I will just have to tear it down and confirm the manufacture then order the correct seals.

Thanks again

I know of a 250TL that had 2 different bucket tilt cylinders on it from the factory.
