I just bought a 1997 NH 1920 SSS. I am curious about eh shuttle shift option as I have never owned a shuttle before. I thought this was to be an instant forward-reverse with the flip of a lever. This tractor functions fine in forward and reverse and through all gear ranges, however I have to clutch to get from forward to reverse and to shift from gear to gear. When I try to go from F-R without the clutch, it will not fully engage...but the tractor will move slightly in either direction.....like it is not fully engaging. I am also unable to shift 1-4 on the fly......as I thought the synchro would allow. Is this correct? It was 0 degrees today when the tractor arrived, maybe this had something to do with it (sluggish tranny?)? Is this a linkage problem maybe? Or maybe a clutch? Or maybe I am incorrect in how I thought this tractor should function? The tractor was a one-owner with 7308 loader with clam shell. and has 766 hours on the meter. Any help would be appreciated....Anything else I should look for? Other than these issues I love the new tractor, runs awesome, steers well, has an overall nice feel to it. Seems like quite an upgrade from my old Massey 135. Thanks in advance for any answers

to my understanding shuttle does not necessarily mean clutch less shifting unless it is Power shuttle (Massey 1500, 1600 series), Synch reverser (Deere) and etc. Shuttle by it self mean one direct path on the shifter mechanism from forward to reverse. I don't believe you have power shuttle. You'll need to clutch but don't have to come to full stop as you have gear synchronizer from forward to reverse.

SSS means Synchro Shuttle Shift. Synchronizers require a clutch to interrupt the power flow prior to a shift. Your tractor is functioning as designed, your expectations were incorrect.

The only Ford/NH compact of the era with clutchless shuttle was the 2120 EHSS. Electro-Hydraulic Shuttle Shift.

I have a 2000 NH 1920 with the SSS trans. As stated above you need to use the clutch when going from F-R and R-F but you don't have to come to a complete stop. I shift from 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 "on the fly" almost every time I use the tractor to move material any distance. You must stop before shifting from L-M, or M-H ranges. I do believe the 0 degree temp will make the trans sluggish. Also use the wooden block on the clutch pedal when the machine is parked over night or longer. Bill C
