New Holland 1630
Hello everyone,
I just purchased a 1998 New Holland 1630 HST 4wd tractor with 7308 loader w/720 hours. When I try to lift the loader it makes a loud whining/squealing noise and the loader goes up but it is very slow & jumpy. I checked the fluid & it is at the full line when cold & the fluid doesnt look dirty or milky. I have taken the bypass valve out of the joystick controls & the manifold diverter block, cleaned them and reinstalled with no difference. Not sure how to check if one of the bypass valves are bad? I was also wondering if there is a screen or screens somewhere I can check to see if clogged? I dont have a manual yet as original owner hasn't found them yet. I have also tried switching the quick connect hoses thinking maybe the previous owner hooked them up incorrectly but still no difference. The previous owner told me he blew a hydraulic line, drove it into his shop while leaking fluid the entire way maybe 500ft. He replaced the line and then this problem started happening. He replaced the filters & fluid last July and it has been sitting since. I was going to replace the filters and fluid but since he just did it before parking it, I was wondering if there was some other things I could try before spending over $200 on filters and hydraulic fluid. The loader will go all the way up and the bucket will also curl but as stated just very slowly and jumpy. The 3 point hitch does the same thing when raised. I am mechanically inclined but haven't worked on many hydraulic systems. I'm assuming I need to get a hydraulic gauge and test for pressure. I have been reading the forums here and others pointed me to tractorbynet because it is such a great forum. Any and all help is appreciated! Sorry for the lengthy post. I have included a video of the noise and what it is doing. Thanks so much!

That looks and sound to me like there is a blockage in the system. The engine looses RPM.

Get some gauges to put in the system. I got my two sets with connectors for under $100 from Surplus Center.

I would not run it without the relief valve.

Ok thank you. I will check them out and see what gauges to get. No known screen on this tractor that may be plugged?

I’d find someone locally with a flow/test meter to rule out pump problem, they may have spoiled the pump when driving it without oil.

Thank you, I am working on getting a liquid filled guage to test it. I also already bought a known good pump just in case that is my problem.

Whine/Jerky sounds like a good sit in the porch with a good friend and.........ahhh, rather it sounds like an aeration/cavitation trouble, pressure guage will only show pressure, not flow......but it won’t hurt.

Don’t overlook suction hoses/tubing from tank to pump.

Haha. How would I go about checking flow? Where would I get a flow test meter? Also I have looked at hoses coming from the tank to pump & dont see anything out of the ordinary.

Most are too expensive for a one time shot for the home owner/farmer, find a local hyd or tractor shop that has one (some don’t) and find out what they would charge to test the output on the tractor. The proper test will put an induced back pressure load on the hyd pump and will show flow characteristics.
I have an old video somewhere on this website that shows my tractor and a good test. I’ll find it.

Check out this thread, my post #6 shows links to my photobucket. Two different videos testing a bad pump and a good pump on our Frankenstein pump test machine. More than likely Your tractor with the herky jerky’s would show up as a fluctuating needle on the bottom needle. The test would tell you if you need to look for your trouble before the flow meter (pump, suction lines, screens etc) or if everything checks out smooth and up to pressure then look for your trouble upstream (relief valves, control valves etc)
