I've got a chance to buy a Massey Ferguson 1010, series 2961 from my father in law.

The negotiations have begun. He promises a " fair price", but he also made his fortune as a trial Attorney and has negotiated some big settlements. As a mere salesman, I know I face a formidable foe.

I'm trying to gather data before we get serious.

What I know-

- < 500hrs
- Front bucket
- snow blade
- belly mower
- rear 3 pt lift
- looks to be in good shape, runs well.
- he paid $10,500 used 7-8 years ago , pretty sure the bucket and mower , and blade came with it. 3 pt purchsed later.
- he used it for projects around his vacation place.
- didn't find out if it's 2wd or 4wd. Does the series number(2961) tell me this?

He tossed out $10K for the whole package. " these things don't depreciate".

What's a counterfoffer/fair price?

Any help/inputs appreciated.

First things first, you need to figure out if that tractor is suitable for you. Is it big enough to do what you want? According to my MF tractor data resource, that is a 16hp tractor with 13pto hp. It retailed for about $8000 when it was brand new (gear version), at the end of its product life cycle, and acutally selling prices were likely a bit lower. That price is without implements or loader.

Tractors do depreciate. But they also seem to hit a level and hold. On the other hand, implements depreciate a lot and pretty much crash through the floor in terms of value. Without knowing the brands and models of the implements it is hard to tell what they might be worth, but brand new a blade can sell for a couple hundred $$ to a whole lot more than that. Brand new mower decks that would be suitable in size for that tractor would run brand new from about $800 to about $2000 depending on brand.

At 16hp/13pto hp, that is pretty darn small (bear in mind, a modern Sub-CUT size tractor is going to have roughly 22 to 25hp and roughly 18 to 20pto hp). Implements will be pretty darn small. I hope you have really small projects, flat land, small property size, etc. For mowing, you will very likely find that a good size garden tractor with HST will outmow roughly 20 year old tractor by a handy margin in speed and cost 1/3 to 1/2 the asking price.

Gerry, Hi and welcome to TBN... Unless I knew the maintenance history of this tractor, being at a vacation home does it gets used and put away until its needed again?this could have a bad effect on its maintenance and care? Maybe, maybe not ,How do feel about the seller ? Is he low priorty on maintenance? Thats one aspect of the deal....

Another is that size tractor going to be exactly what you need? Reason is there are newer models with more hp for a little more $ w/loader less money without a loader but they are new; without the implements of course but close to that same price

The other is my opinion , I think its too much to pay for that particular size tractor even if it is 4WD and I wouldn't buy it if it wasn't 4WD.. $7500 at most no more.... But thats my opinion /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Let him try to get $10k for first , then if you really want it make the offer... But these family deals can make for BAD BLOOD /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Hi:

Here's what the used tractor price guide on www.machinerylink.com (bottom left) says, assuming 1993 4wd hydro:

Value Estimation Sheet
Type: Tractor
Manuf: Massey Ferguson
Model: MF-1010 Hydro 4WD
Year: 1993
Make: Toyosha

Engine Information
No. Cylinders: 3
Displ. Cu. In.: 53
No. Speeds: Variable
H.P.: 12.00
Approx Shipping Weight (lbs): 2000
Cab: No

Estimated Average Value
Less Repairs
Premium $7,307
Good $6,829
Fair $6,179

Approx. Retail Price New:
$10,840

Go check it with the more detailed info once you get the info. Looks like that vintage of tractor was made by Toyosha in Japan, which I believe may have gone out of business (is that right folks?), so parts might be a concern. Subsequent models (like my 1220) were made by Iseki, who is doing quite well and still making tractors for MF today I believe. It *might* be the case that Iseki bought out Toyosha and may be supplying parts for that model, but I don't know any details around that. I'd say call a few Massey Ferguson dealers in your local area and ask a lot of questions.

Worst case, ask him to let you take an extended test drive (extended meaning a couple or three months) at your property.

HTH,
Dave

Iseki didn't buy them out. I also think that Machinerylinks has the year wrong. By 1993, MF was well into the Isekis. I could believe a 1983. IMHO the price is to high.

Jerry:

I was thinking that 1993 seemed a little odd too...my 1220 is 1993, and it seems awefully odd that MF would have two different Japanese mfg's engaged at the same time. I'm thinking 1983 sounds more like it as well. I was also thinking the price is way high, given what I bought my 1220 for.

Best friend just bought my Kubota. He has a MF1010 with 4wd and belly mower that he's talking about selling for $3500 - $4000. He bought it new and has around 800 hours. I would say FIL is asking too much!

This is my third try posting, the othere didn't show up.

First, thanks to everybody for the inputs - I've learned a lot.

I've got 7 acres, 2 mowed, 5 woods and a 200 foot curved uphill drive way thats nasty to plow, and inconvenient to snowblow. I htionk the 1010 would be just right for moving firewood, clearing snow with the bucket, mowing etc. 4wd probably a good idea.

I'll be at the local MF dealer tommorrow on a fact finding mission.

Fron what I've read here, $10k is way to much.

Family deals can be trouble. He;s got 5 other SILs, but I'm the one w the cash.

Thanks

I think he ought to just give it to his daughter...you'd of course have the responsibilities to actually use it /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

gerry100, Hey I think dave has a great idea!! Let the daughter have it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Sounds like this guy isn't going to give anything away(it wouldn't be fair to the others /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Waah)

Well maybe you could hook up with gmsssi's buddy, Now that sounds like the right price /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif When you need an implement you could just borrow the FIL's
