Got hold of 25+ acres of fairly wooded land this spring and am looking for the right tractor to tame it. Still in the research stage, but this forum looks to have some good info. Too bad the Compact Tractor Buyers Guide is unavailable, that looked like something I could use.

Welcome Bananaman. I am doing the same with a smaller patch of woods in my area. I have been pleased with my L3700 with respect to the size and power I have had available for all of my tasks. It is maneuverable and powerful enough to deal with downed trees and hogging down thickets of saplings. The only thing I wish I had done was get a grapple to help move the debris easier. I have to push it around since it is too big to fit inside the bucket. I bought a Ratchet Rake to help with that since I did not get teeth on my bucket and the smooth edge allowed the tree trunks to roll under the bucket and I was forever backing up to get the bucket back underneath as I rolled it along. A grapple would have made it much easier to grab the logs and carry them off.

For maintaining woods and fields, 25-40hp is plenty for anything you would want to do. If you think you will be needing to move larger timber, you may want to stay on the heavier machine side. If you think you will be doing any ground engaging ag work, then the higher hp range is helpful. When pulling a plow or a tree out of the ground, tractor weight becomes your friend because it gives you traction.

A Big Texas Howdy. This is a great place to do your research, but you've got to find the tractor your comfortable with. Read all you can and then find a good dealer that you feel good about. And read up on "Safe Operation" of tractors and be careful.

Thanks for all the helpful advise. Looks like a few Kubota guys here in Texas. I looked at them, but the dealer here in Waco doesn't impress me much. They don't even come out to the lot if you are out looking at their tractors. The JD dealer on the other hand has been more than helpful, and a lot of those guys own land and work it, not just sell tractors.
When the time comes I'll make sure and test all of them before I buy.

Welcome to TBN! What county are you in? East or west of I35? There is a lot of nice black land around McClennan County. Falls county has some good dirt but when you get over west to Coryell or South to Bell you can get into some rocky areas.
