A little of everything
We were finally able to get started putting up some of our new fence. We got a 1,000 of the 3,500 that we have been able to clear so far put up and 2,000 of our alleyway up. Long way to go but at least a start.

Nice looking fence! Sure is a lot of work but good looking fence makes the effort worthwhile. Are you using concrete on all your wood posts? Is the jumbo size dark brown pole a piece of telephone pole? How are you stretching your fence?

Have to agree, looks good!

I've built quite a bit of fence for myself and for others. I always enjoy seeing peoples work and various methods of building corner and end braces.

Thanks! I agree a nice looking fence makes the entire place look better. I normally don’t use concrete and prefer to use fine dry sand (old blasting sand we have piled up) to pack with but it’s been raining on and off here for two weeks so there’s no dry sand to be found. We substituted with concrete to be sure the pull post did not give on us. Only the large post (dark brown) holes are drilled (3’ deep) and packed, all the others were driven in the ground with a post driver. She is an antique but will even drove the 7.5” brace post in the ground if we sharpen the end.

The dark brown post are cut from main line utility power poles. They are larger than your average telephone pole. The butt end averages around 20” and goes down to around 18” in diameter. That’s the reason for the 24” auger …LOL. We have a main utility line that runs through some of our property so we get them for free when they take them down.

We have been using a standard clamp style fence stretcher to pull our wire nothing fancy. I starting fabricating a custom fence un-roller with a built in clamp for stretching the wire. It will be off set to the RH side of the tractor so you can drive forward when un-rolling. I hope to have it finished soon. It should make things a lot easier.

I’m also thinking about building a better post driver. One that can be adjusted for ground conditions with hydraulics. That will be a big plus and should be a fun build.

I didn't realize that posts could be put in so straight, clean, and level with a post driver. I always thought posts put in with a driver wouldn't be straight. Learned something. Looks like you have a wood post every 20'? I put up about 2,000 feet of new woven wire 3 years ago. I did buy a fence unroller/stretcher from TSC to do this. It was worth it's weight in gold. You are doing an excellent job. Please keep us posted.

Thanks! That’s the way we do it, I just like the way it looks. I have seen many methods that I’m sure also work well. What method do you use?

I will admit that we cheated a little on the two long curved sections. If you have ever tried to curve a fence you know it’s sort of tricky to get a true curve an not a bunch of corners. My nephew is a surveyor and he helps us on the farm when he has time. He uses a Trimble GPS surveying system and he used it to shoot all our main post. He then loading all the data points into his software system and it gave us all the locations for the post. He then used the GPS unit to mark all the post locations for the curves. All we had to do was drive a post at each flag.

For my ends I usually build a double H brace. The first post being 10-12" X 8' and the others being the same size as the line posts. Then I use one continuos brace wire, stating at the bottom of the end post going to the top of post closest to the rest of the fence. I use a double wrap of hi tensile in a double figure 8 pattern with a regular fence tightener for tension. As many as I've built I don't have a single picture to help describe what I'm talking about.

I know all about curves. The last one we just used four straight sections on the inside of the curve and five on the outside. It looked clean and the guy was very happy.

It does take some practice. You'd be surprised how much it takes some! Lol

I've always wondered if one of the top & tilt set ups could work for getting the driver plumb? It's the amount of shaking and beating around that I worry about.

I don't know. Have you seen these? I like the idea of the post holder and I really like the ease of the hydraulic adjust. I just wonder how the cable will hold up.
