I bought a replacement hydraulic pump unit for a small dump trailer......I've mounted it so the electrical connections can be made but have not put in any fluid because I want to be sure the motor works before adding fluid and being unable to return it if something is defective. Nothing happens when I push the control button. battery is charged and connections are good but the solenoid doesn't click - is there an internal switch of some kind that will prevent the motor from working unless there is adequate fluid? any help of advice would be appreciated.

Sorry would need lots more info on the unit and pictures of the reservoir. Are there any wires going to the reservoir?

thanks for the quick reply. I've attached pictures that I hope will show the detail needed....there are no electrical connections other than those in the pictures. Could that electrical connection closest to the fluid reservoir be a pressure valve of some kind that requires fluid to open the circuit? Also, the brass fitting twists and raises or lowers about 3/8" of an inch....what is that for and in what position should it be in for operation? thanks for taking a look....

Is the battery post visible in the pictures the positive or negative post?

The wire going near the reservoir should be to open the solenoid to allow fluid to return to the reservoir. The brass screw is probably an adjustable drop rate. Is this pump power up, gravity down?

The pump has most likely serial motor. It doesn't matter what the polarity is. It will always rotate the same direction. It it is permanent magnet motor then polarity maters. There should be some documentation for the pump. There should be wiring schematic. Can you attach (or link to it) it to your post.

the post on the battery is negative, going to ground on the trailer (connections wire brushed clean) - the pump is grounded thru two bolts on the underside...clean and tight. the positive connection at the battery is not pictured but it is the lead shown attached to the pump. it's power up and gravity down. the pump came thru amazon and didn't include any documentation at all, and they don't provide any method to contact the seller directly. the specs provided are generic for several models with some clarification in the Q&A - for example, which models have plastic and which have metal tanks (mine is the 6 quart model). Here's the link :

12volt + from bat. should go to motor solenoid and ground would go to black large motor stud. The control switch is getting it's 12v from motor solenoid then feeding the hyd solenoid down or motor solenoid for up.

That is how I think it should work.

The pictures in the amazon ad show the wiring diagram, the positive goes to the open side of the solenoid and the negative goes to the other post on the motor. Frame is not grounded.

Can you elaborate on a "serial motor" where polarity doesn't matter on a DC motor?

BTW, glad OP got it going
