In this thread I will not talk about wells, pressure switches, tanks and water levels I PROMISE!!! :) Do any of you have plans that you would share for building a storage shed\workshop? It will be mainly used for lawn equipment, sons dirt bike, and general tools and such. I may go bigger it just depends on the cost. I have a lot of wood left over from another project that will pretty much take care of the floor framing, sheeting and 1 maybe 2 walls so I am realy hoping to get it in the dry for no more than $500 more. Then I can work on other things like wiring as I have time and money\wife permits.

Any suggestions, comments, advice,experience, plans?

Thanks
Wade

can never be big enough....I'd jump to 12 x 16 at least....it's only 4' more but a 25% increase in room. I have a 12 x 12 ....and a 12 x 20 ....12 x 16 is a better size in both directions....including material savings/ minimum loss to waste.

I have no plans.I built a 12x24 several yrs ago. I had gone to look at some of those portable metal buildings and got a pic in my mind, and built mine sort of based on them

A lot depends on how you want to build it, framed up walls or post and panel, shed roof or gable, doors, windows?

I do agree that you'd be better off with 12x16 or even larger. For me at least, it seems that every storage project I've gotten into filled up a lot quicker than I thought it would.

No plans but it would be just common framing methods. Only suggestion is to besure at least one door is a wide one. I made that mistake when I rehabbed an old shed. It had a 2' high knee foundation of very solid concrete 6" thick. One small door. I wanted it for my yard equip. Rented a diamond saw and cut the knee wall back to allow for a 4' door. Just barely fits my rider mower with deck - I should have made it 4-6" wider.

If doors are swinging type, I prefer them to swing _out_. It is amazing how that simple thing frees up space inside.

I have a 10 x 24 prefab building with a 14 x 24 pole shed attached on one side. It has become extremely useful for the garden equipment. The 10 x24 has a ramp up to double doors. That allows the ATV, walk behind tiller, chipper etc to roll inside easily. The zero turn mower fits as well. The shed allows for parking a couple of tractors or other equipment.

Just sharing a couple of ideas that might make your building more useful.

I have a 12'x20'x12' tall storage barn with a loft, the loft adds lots of storage. This was a kit from Menards, you can purchase the trusses, they are folded in half and have treated floor joists. Easy to haul, just unfold and set, level and brace. I think these trusses are $50 ea, space 2' apart and build any length you want. I have a 8'x 7' role up door. If you build from scratch, there are some plans on the net.

It sounds like you have decided to build a shed with a wood floor. There are some drawbacks to that. One is the wood has an upper limit for weight bearing capacity. The other is the floor needs to be off the ground to allow air circulation and avoid rot. This means you need a ramp for heavy things, and depending on how far above the ground you place the floor, it becomes an unwelcome critter habitat.

I would prefer a pole-type construction with a packed crushed stone floor. You can lay a treated 4x6 or 6x6 down on the ground in a gravel bed, tied to a pole at each end, and use it as a low threshold to make a door seal better. Drive some rebar stakes into the ground through drilled holes to keep it straight and in place.

I would vote for making it bigger too unless you are trying to stay under some maximum no permit needed size.

I built a 12' X 16' shed in peices in my backyard in Florida and transported all the parts to north Georgia and assembled them. It worked out great. I will try to include the layout here. OK that did not work I will try to shrink the file and try again. Ignore the first attachment I cant figure out how to delete it
