Branson 4220i
Just Got a new 4220i (kukje 42 hp) 4 cyl.) 17 hours now.
Starts fine runs good, however between 1300 and 2100 rpm the engine sounds like it has a loose bolt rattling around in the engine. Some might call it clatter, but it only randomly happens like a tick/ping/misfire every 3 to 5 seconds. It's not a real loud rattle and probably can't be noticed unless you are standing near the tractor. The strange thing is that at idle and up to 1200 rpm it purrs like a kitten and if I boost the rpm to 2200 or higher it sounds fine. There is no loss of power at any rpm even when it making the rattling noise. I hate to make any changes to the engine or play with the injectors as the warranty should cover any/all problems at this point and I don't consider myself much of a diesel mechanic. If one of the injectors is dirty or clogged, is there a diesel fuel additive to clean the injector? Maybe the tractor came with bad/old fuel? Maybe (If I'm Lucky) it will go away on it's own?
Could I have damaged something by working it too hard during break in?
Any ideas?

I would think that if it was bad fuel it should show up across the rpm band. Are you "lugging" the engine under load at that rpm? Is this noise under load or just sitting there with rpm raising, because the engine will sound "abnormal/ strainge" (if you will) if it does not have a load on it. Let me know.

This is with virtually no load nothing on the pto ... same thing in all twelve speeds fwd and reverse and stopped. I haven't thought about putting a load on it or pushing some dirt while it's making the noise to see if it stops.
Thanks,

Does it make the rattle when the engine is cold and warmed up ?

Sometimes tractors sit for a while before they are shipped out, and some dealers let them sit in the rain for weeks on end.

If it was mine I would add some diesel fuel conditioner, the type that removes water, or you could even drain the tank then refill it.

I always try to tackle the cheapest repairs first, then move up.

good luck, the 4220i is a great machine:)

TAG4220,
I was grading our dirt road last Sunday, when I remembered your question about the rattling. I have a 4720i, noticed the samething you were describing. To be honest I think it is just the Cummins motor in them. My FEL, pulling a plow, etc work just fine. I have recently bought fuel, etc. I have about 60 hours on mine.
Hope this helps ease any fears.

From what your describing it's injector noise. A decent diesel fuel conditioner should help quiet the injectors. Mine rattled enough when I first bought it that I called the dealer about it. He said it's injectors and normal. I have since used fuel conditioner in every tank and it's a lot quieter.

The stuff I use is...
