How long should you run this beast before you do your first oil/filter change? Should you wait to the 50 hour maintenance or ?? I can't seem to find the answer in the owner's manual, it just says "earlier".

Any and all advice appreciated.

Regards,
Dave

I waited until 50 hours.

There has been some talk of "break in" oil being used in new engines. Not sure if it is or not.

I do chanage oil and filter every 50 hours...but even though it might be my nature to want to do it sooner the first time I personally did not...

I don't remember seeing that "earlier" mention in my manual. Had I, I might have changed mine the first time earlier... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif... Probably at the 20 hour mark or so...

I think we think alike! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I wish they'd give a better recommendation like 25 hours the first time and every 50 thereafter. I always change my new car's oil at 1k and then follow the mfg's recommendations after that.

Have a good one,
Dave

As long as you're disposing of your used oil properly there isn't really an issue with changing it too often. If you aren't worried about the few bucks it costs in oil change it is good insurance.

But once you've got it broken in, changing more than every 50 hours is probably overkill. I did my first change at 50 hours and have kept to that schedule ever since. No problems yet (we'll have to see when we hit several thousand hours).

It's your Baby, Change it whenever you want.
My neighbor makes fun of me for changing the filter every time I change the oil.

I asked him if he puts on his dirty underwear after he takes a shower.

I got no answer. Guess that was a personal kind of question.

/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Thanks!

Spent 3 hours on it yesterday. My wife is telling me that I have to work on "other" chores today. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

You may not realize it but that is a good sign. Had the quotation marks been around "chores" it would have been a different matter... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I got a good laugh from that one. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I for one have always changed my filters anytime I changed oil. But it has now occurred to me, I wonder if the efficiency of the oil filter goes up with some use. Air filter efficiency does go up with use, but I don't know about oil filters. If the oil filter efficiency does go up that would explain why they don't say to change the filter at every oil change. Does anyone know?

I think the risk you run is that the filter goes into "bypass" mode instead of filtering if the restriction is too great. I know on cars the oil filters are designed to go into bypass when the engine needs oil faster than it can be filtered. Not sure if this applies to tractors though as you're pretty much running max engine speed when mowing and I can't see that they'd want to be in bypass mode the entire time you were running.

Dave

i would suggest u use it a while before you change the oil and filter, mabey not 50 hrs , as 50 hrs on the meter is a bit more than 50 hrs.change as u feel comfortable, there are so many thoughts on the subject. but i always chage 2 x a year with filter.. don't cost much and don't take much time and i sure feel better when i crank it over.
