Hello,
Today I went to Tractor supply and ordered a new 5.5' x 10' aluminum trailer. They had one on the lot, but I ordered one straight from the factory because I don't want one that has sat out in the weather for who knows how long......the man said the one in the lot was only there for 2 months, but that is 2 months too long. I guess it might seem strange to some people, but this trailer will be kept in the garage for it's lifetime with me and I don't want to start with rusted bolts, springs or any other steel components that are on the trailer! With all that said, I am excited to be getting it. I started looking at them over a year ago and was undecided whether I really needed it. Since then, it went up $100 and then just recently it went up another $100. I figured if I was ever going to buy it, it better be now....the
aluminum ones never go on sale and they won't be coming down in price!!!! I'll post pictures when I get it. Merry Christmas to me !!!!!!!!

Congrats on the new purchase.

Was there some rusting on components on the one they had? How do you know the MFG won't send one that has been sitting on their lot a while?

I have a steel 5X10 I built in 1993 that still serves me fine. The 5/4 deck boards rotted so I changed the bed to expanded metal this year and repainted it. Had to add some reinforcement to the frame to go with expanded metal over wood. Just welded some angle lengthwise between the cross members. The rest of the frame and cross members is built from 3" channel. Gets scratches and surface rust here and there but I just wire brush and touch up as needed. You can save a little weight with aluminum but you have to use metal that is twice as thick so it's not as much savings as you think it will be.

I have been eyeing the aluminum car haulers I've seen.

Hey JD855guy,
Yes, I have given some thought about getting one from the factory that has been sitting in their lot, however, there's not much I can do about that. The one that was in the yard at Tractor Supply didn't look bad (the treated boards forming the deck looked a little weathered) but I carried through with my idea anyway. I do like the weight savings on the aluminum trailer (about 300lbs lighter than same size steel).....I'll be able to move it around easier in my garage.
I really bought this trailer so I can haul my Gator or my Cub LoBoy if needed. When I bought my Gator, I brought it home on a 5'x8' trailer, borrowed from my wife's sister. I only owned a 4'x8' trailer. It only had an inch or two left from side to side and the rear wheel was right on the back edge. We had it strapped so tight it didn't move a hair on the way home. So the 5.5'x10' will really work out nicely !!!

Every TSC I have ever gone to seems to always have rust all over their outside stored equipment.
I would not buy anything new with rust/corrosion already beginning.
75 years ago (I was 3) my mother taught me to put my toys away at night.
I still do...in my two barns!

I have been eyeing the aluminum car haulers I've seen.

A couple years ago I invested in an Aluma model 7816 (16') car hauler and have been very happy with it. Weighs only 1100 lb but the GVWR is 7000 so it is more than adequate for hauling my Jeep or ATV around. Tows like a dream! Special ordered it because I wanted an extra-long tongue - that way I don't have to use a hitch extender when the camper is mounted on the truck.
