I got this thing over the weekend -it's my first "proper" tractor- and it has a couple things that I'm hoping are straightforward common problems with the NAA tractors. Although I'm very much a newbie with tractors, I'm quite mechanical and have a history with car and truck restorations and repairs, so I'm planning on doing a lot of DIY. I'm absolutely going to clean it up and spray it either the original gray and red or the dark gray like the 9n. I don't know who thought teal and red looked good together, but we disagree. While I'm not planning on fully restoring it, I would really like to do quality repairs as things break and just keep it nice as I use it so that I may sell it years from now for more than I paid for it. Either way, I'm really excited to finally have a tractor for our mini farm.
Anyhow, the main issue is the PTO. Instead of spinning, it makes a humming grinding sound and it more or less just coasts. It won't move under load. Is it safe to assume that the gears at the front of the shaft are ground nice and smooth, and a new one is in order? What else may be a problem with it? Bent shift forks or something?
Also, the 3pt hitch only moves if I push the lever on the right side (draft control or something?) all the way down past it's normal position and hold it. As soon as I let go of the lever, the hitch falls back down. This is with a bush hog attached, too, I should add. The hitch won't move but VERY slowly in the "up" position of the lever.
Are these two things related at all?
I've ordered the NAA shop manual, and I foresee many, many greasy fingerprints on it in the near future. What should be my plan of attack with these repairs?
Thanks, guys. I'm SO glad I found this forum!
