I got this thing over the weekend -it's my first "proper" tractor- and it has a couple things that I'm hoping are straightforward common problems with the NAA tractors. Although I'm very much a newbie with tractors, I'm quite mechanical and have a history with car and truck restorations and repairs, so I'm planning on doing a lot of DIY. I'm absolutely going to clean it up and spray it either the original gray and red or the dark gray like the 9n. I don't know who thought teal and red looked good together, but we disagree. While I'm not planning on fully restoring it, I would really like to do quality repairs as things break and just keep it nice as I use it so that I may sell it years from now for more than I paid for it. Either way, I'm really excited to finally have a tractor for our mini farm.

Anyhow, the main issue is the PTO. Instead of spinning, it makes a humming grinding sound and it more or less just coasts. It won't move under load. Is it safe to assume that the gears at the front of the shaft are ground nice and smooth, and a new one is in order? What else may be a problem with it? Bent shift forks or something?

Also, the 3pt hitch only moves if I push the lever on the right side (draft control or something?) all the way down past it's normal position and hold it. As soon as I let go of the lever, the hitch falls back down. This is with a bush hog attached, too, I should add. The hitch won't move but VERY slowly in the "up" position of the lever.

Are these two things related at all?

I've ordered the NAA shop manual, and I foresee many, many greasy fingerprints on it in the near future. What should be my plan of attack with these repairs?

Thanks, guys. I'm SO glad I found this forum!

I grew up on one of those. Ours did not have the loader or hydro. hooked up but my memory says that you have hydro. or 3ph. but not both at the same time. but I could be wrong on that. On the pto I would pull the cover the leaver is on and look inside and see. set the tractor on a hill with that side up to keep the fluid away from that cover and look inside, you should be able to see from there. It has been 30+ yrs but I beleave I am right on this one.

There is also a Vintage Tractor section with a subsection for Ford.

that tractor obviously has a front pump.

on a machine withput a front pump, you could tap the oe hyd system a variety of ways.

no matter which way you tapped them, if you were diverting fluid for the laoder, at that moment, the 3pt would not work.. when fluid was not being diverted.. 3pt would work. if you didn't use a top cover valve or mod to the blank cover, then you had to chain the 3pt to use the loader...

I will let someone who is more knowledgeable with the hydraulics help you with that part. All I can tell you is that the hydraulic problem would not be related to the PTO. You will most likely have to remove the the hydraulic unit under the seat to find the source of the problem. While this is off, you can simply look down at the PTO shaft, shift collar, and shift fork and see what is wrong there. I'd guess the shaft is just twisted off. You'll need to take out the 4 bolts out of the collar that holds the shaft in to pull the whole thing out. If it is broken off inside, you will need access through the top to get it out. If this where my tractor, I'd drain the hydraulic fluid and take off the hydraulic cover so I could get some more information about both problems.

After you get that fixed, you are going to need a big counterweight for the back of that tractor.

if he pulls the pto shaft.. don't worry.. he'll be draining hyds and diffy whether he wants to or not!

It sounds like the PTO is not engaging fully. This can be caused by worn/damaged engagement dog as well as other issues.

The lift issue is most likely due to a worn cam follower pin. You will need to remove the lift cover to replace this.

observation to find the cause of the problem is key to the repair. when the op reports back what he see's we can proceede
