My dad just bought a new JD 5093E and it started blowing black soot out of the exhaust onto the cab glass at about 25 hrs, not just a little but a lot. He carried it back to the dealer and at first they said that it was not right and it probably needed a new injector pump or the timing advanced, now they say it is neither and is normal, the tractor is kept under a pole barn so it is not getting water in the exhaust pipe, anybody have any experience with this model or heard of this happening before?

A certain amount of this can be normal - especially on an engine that is not broken in and idles alot or is not worked very hard. Deere recommends avoiding prolonged periods of idling especially at cold temperatures for the first 100 hours. Also be sure engine is warming up to normal range on temperature gauge while operating. If not, you may have a stuck thermostat that can create engine"slobber". Also be sure to keep break-in oil in engine for first 100 hours. This assures that piston rings seat properly. Also be sure to run good quality fuel with a high cetane level.

My 5093E puts out smoke under high load or rapidly increasing load but not much under normal conditioins. Some black smoke occasionaly is normal, but if it is smoking all the time you have a problem.

Thanks' for the replies guys this tractor has not been under a load yet, all he has done with it is carry round rolls of hay to the cows, no hard work whatsoever. The stuff that it blows out is like what you would see if you were burning newspaper floating up into the air except it's sticky and sticks to the windshield, kinda messy and definately suspicious. Thanks' again for your replies. Charlie.

I agree with jd110. I'd suggest putting it to work and get engine up to operating temp.

Occasional black smoke is normal from Tier 3 and earlier diesels, but not on the cab glass. Unless you can rotate the stack on the manifold yourself, that's still something the dealer should correct for you. My exhaust isn't vertical, so it's the loader leg that catches the soot. It too started at about 25 hours, and is still doing it at 100. I think the inside of the (clean, new) muffler catches the first 25 hours worth. The black smoke issue will go away once DPFs (diesel particulate filters) become required (MY2014 I think).

I've got one or more DPFs on my Touareg. I can wipe my finger around the inside of either tail pipe, and it will come out with nothing on it but road dirt. Been a diesel driver since the 80's. And to me, that's akin to magic.

It is not unusual at all to get soot blown out of the exhaust on start up especially if it has got some moisture in it. Just humid air will do it.

I have a 5520 with the same engine and know a number of people with this engine in that series tractor and have not heard of one complaint. They do take time to break in and the owner's manual states to let idle at "fast idle" of 1200 rpm or so as opposed to natural idle that is under 1000 rpm. I have noticed this year that the new fuel I bought (last fall) does smoke more than I would have expected. This series tractor is very popular around here and it has a reputation as bulletproof with trouble-free mechanics. I'll bet I have seen hundreds and not one taken apart. Just my two cents here.

I have to agree on this one, all tractors smoke a little. Unless its full tier 4. But its not. Their not made to be smoke free.
