I have studied this site for a while but never needed help before today.I took deleivery of a new b2910 today.I have owned a b2710 for 3 years w/a 60" mmm, about 6 mos ago I installeda koyker FEL. Since then I broke a frt axle and drive shaft. It is now out of warranty and has 1100 hours on it everything still operates like new.But when I got home today I noticed the FEL on my new 2910 is a 401 not a 402 and it does not have nearly the power or the reach the Koyker FEL has on my old 2710 as this may be a good thing.maybe less stress on the new 2910 ?maybe? Or did I just get stuck w/some old stock? And I cannot decide whether to go back w/another 60" mmm or a 72" I am worried the 2910 want be able to hack it in tall grass any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the Koyker had too much power if you broke tractor parts using it. I had an early B2710 with the LA401 loader and was quite happy with it. I'm surprised your new tractor came with the 401 instead of the 402 because I thought the 401 was discontinued and replaced by the 402. Does anyone know whether that's the case or not? Of course your dealer may have just still had a 401 in stock. Just in looking at the two loaders the only difference I noticed was that they turned the locking pins, supposedly to make it a little easier to get hold of the hairpin clips when you remove the loader, although I had no problem with the arrangement of the pins on the 401. Does anyone know whether there are any other differences?

As for mowers, I didn't use a mid-mount mower; used a rear discharge, 3-point, 60" mower and it always seemed to be no load at all on the B2710. I think you'll find the B2910 has plenty of power for the 72" mower, if that's what you want.

To attenuate the load on any front axle, you would have proper counter-balance ballast on the rear of the tractor, mostly a combination of rear wheel weights / loaded rear tires / additional 3-pt ballast weight / all maintaining a correct geometry relationship…

Properly ballasting a tractor is a multi-prong approach to safer tractor habits, more tractor stability, and proper operation and maximum usefulness of the tractor and implements as a whole… /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yellow (nice car btw! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif), I bought my B2910 a little over 2 years ago and it came with the 402 loader. I think Bird is right...the 402 replaced the 401.

I have the 72" MM deck...don't worry about tall grass....the 2910 has plenty of power for it! Very easy on/off also!

yellow69z28rs,

I would be on the phone asking the dealer...no telling the dealer I wanted the current 402 loader.

It would not sit well with me to have the older model on a new tractor. At least not without my prior approval...

Now if you traded in the B2710 without telling the dealer about the front end problems...maybe he is returning the favor? Trying cover his losses somehow?

Hope things work out the best for you. I've done a lot of loader work with my b2910 and LA402 loader over the last year, without babying it, and it has performed flawlessly. Has the power to pick the rear wheels off the ground sometimes, but that is mainly if I catch something heavy on the bucket corner rather than in the middle I think. I rarely run the engine above 2,000 rpm except for mowing, so I may not have seen full loader power.

John,

That is a good point and one we don't always see, I think.

I do doubt that wheel weights/tire ballast help take any load off the front axle though. It looks to me like to get weight off the front, weight would have to be added behind the rear axle. Might call it the "see-saw" effect.

In my mind, anything added anywhere in the back helps keep the rear wheels on the ground, which is a very good thing. While weight added behind the rear axle does both keep the rear wheels on the ground and take weight off the front axle.

Half the time when I use my loader I have the backhoe hanging on the back. Never really thought about it, but that is the best thing I could be doing to lighten the front end axle load!

I guess this is one of those things that is so simple we don't always see it. Thanks for pointing it out!

My B2710 was purchased in 2000 (serial # 13xxx) and it came with the LA402 loader.

Hi Bill,

Yes, that is correct... the reason you want the "rear tires/wheels" weighted/loaded is to anchor the "fulcrum" on your see-saw, providing more stability overall, and any rear weight beyond/behind the rear axle will tend to "lift" the front axle up...

In essence, you can lift many many many more pounds of stuff in your bucket with this method (greatly exceeding the mfrs. rated loader spec's)... however you reach the point of exceeding the "rear axle" limitations or center castings or loader assy and straining/over stressing these components for eventual fatigue and failure... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have a 2001 2710 and it came with a 402 loader. As far as the specs difference I don't know.
