We have large dogs. We have always had large dogs. Large dogs come with a responsibility. My wife and I accept total responsibility for our dogs. As well we should. When we moved here five years ago the fences were horrible. Not acceptable to contain either a horse or dog. With moving and everything else it took me a while to get good fences up. I did this by myself. 3,000 feet of fence. While this fence was under construction we lost track of our dogs once for a few seconds and they ran onto the neighbors property. They fired a shotgun over our dogs heads to scare them back. I saw them do it. That did work. I heard them laughing about it when our dogs ran back. That was five years ago.Today their Alaskan Malamute wandered on to our place. They have no fence to contain their dogs. The neighbor's son came and got it today. In the last five years we have had to call them to come and get their dogs at least thirty times. But I let my dogs get loose once 5 years five years ago and they fire guns at them and laugh. As the neighbor's son walked away leading his dog this just struck me as odd.

Well, they probably treat their animals worse than they treat you. Can't cure genetic defects. You are in a bad position; you really care about your animals and they don't care about theirs. It's one of those things you have to put up with I think.

I don't know Ohio's laws, but here my understanding is it is illegal to shoot a domestic animal anywhere unless it is attacking livestock or a person.

We aren't going to shoot anyone's dogs unless they are a threat to us or our livestock. Dogs do sometimes get loose. Even ours. We understand this. I just wish my neighbor did also.

In some areas firing a shotgun OVER the dogs is not viewed as being real bad.

Don't call THEM when their dogs come on your property, call the warden.

maybe try their method to dissuade their dog from getting on YOUR property! lol

My neighbors seem to let their dogs run loose often too. it is not uncommon for a pile of evidence to be left around my property all time... I'm not happy with it either and have mentioned it. my newest neighbor is good she fenced her place and keep her dogs there.

I guess you can consider yourself lucky that they did shoot your dogs rather than shoot in the air. Is your fence electric? That helps.

Our house sits about 600 feet off the county road. While the left side of the drive was always fenced, it took me a couple of years to get the right side fenced. Up until then I had problems but once the long driveway became the only way in, it seems to even intimidate animals. Course', that zap helps should they test the fence.

In fact, we had issues with some trash down the road and their horse and burro until we got everything fenced off. I finally called the sheriff when the burro got into our barn and destroyed some very expensive medications along with alot of other damage.

Sounds like you have idiots next door and it is a no-win situation. I think a glare with nothing said when they come for their dogs would be the best bet. Any action however justified would likely provoke them.

Not so much with my current place but at the last one I used to shoot alot myself. We had alot of groundhogs so when I had free time I would be out and about enough that people knew I had weapons and used them. But then so did everyone else in that area as at least one hapless thief found out when some farmer plugged him..

I would never go near the property line or let them see you with weapons if you choose that route. Maybe some occasional target practice where they can only hear you would do.

Just tell them that your dogs mean a lot to you and if they are on their property, please let you know,, just like you do for their dogs on your lot, rather than shooting over their heads.

I didn't mean you would shoot their dogs. Maybe Ohio has a similar law that you could bring up.

I shot one of my neighbors dogs after multiple warnings. I let our chickens out of their regular runs and into the yard and garden every once in awhile. This dog would be ready and as soon as I went in, into my yard killing chickens. Warned it's owner twice and told him the dog would not be coming home anymore. Was eating lunch one day and my wife saw it come over so I waited and dropped it with the 12g on it's way back home. I hated having to do it because it's just not me. I barried it and part of the problem was solved... the owner is still at large. I understand your problem OP because I try to keep our animals on our land and our neighbor who is minus one dog now, kind of sounds like yours.

Our dogs are hard fenced now. Chain link or Red Brand no-climb. For the short trip from our chain linked back yard to the no-climb pasture fence they have shock collars on. These are not mean large dogs. Just responsibly controlled large dogs. The neighbor's dogs are just a minor annoyance. Much like coyotes, skunks, or racoons to us. If it ever came to the neighbor's dogs harming our dogs, our livestock, or us I know how to deal with that. I have done this in the past.

All our dogs are fenced in the yard - free roaming inside. Our inside dog gets a 1/2 mile run twice a day with the golf cart. We have been lucky so far, because all our neighbors take care of their dogs. About 4 months ago, while collecting trash on the side of the road, there was a small stray with no collar at the end of the driveway. I drove to the local Country Store, hoping to find its owner. As soon as I got out of the truck with the dog in my arms, a little girl ran to me, calling the dog's name. It was her's and her Father thanked me. This made me feel so good. A little girl reunited with her pet.
