need swivel ideas

" like a engine lift" i was planning on using parts of a truck axle, peice of axle tube and both beatrings to build the swivel but both my free axle deals fell thru any one have another idea for making the swivel? thought about a pipe in a pipe but no sure how easy it will turn, thanks

Not long ago I changed the front bearing assy on my Jimmy (4WD)
Kept the old unit knowing I'd find a use for it and you just gave me its final destination!

Essentially a double bearing with a wheel rim bolt pattern and weldable from many angles.
Should do the trick just fine.

Try an auto salvage yard.
In fact most front drive autos should make for a decent doner part.
Naturally I assume you weld.

any spindle type bearing should do, even a trailer type form a place like Norther,

if you will have a lot of load on it use a thrust type bearing on the bottom, (like a throw out bearing on a clutch), or a thrust bearing use on a spindle,

actually a number of washers with grease will work fair as well, for a thrust bearing,

for the most part pipe on pipe would most likely work reasonable, (a windmill is pipe on cast, with some just a washer for a thrust bearing some have balls for a thrust bearing,

with a few grease Zerk's in the outer pipe so one can keep some lubricant in it,

Pipe nipple with a cap. drill a 3/4" inch hole through it. Drop in a bearing and run a bolt through the center of it. Make sure the hole in the cap is big enough to just catch the outter race and the bolt head cover the inner.

Pipe on pipe will work fine, the more overlap you have the better it will work, I have used that for a truck mount jib crane for years, I installed a grease fitting low on the outer pipe and pump it in till it reaches the top. Never had any problems with it and I lift way more than any stove length wood will weigh.

I'd suggest you don't want it to swing freely. To me, better to go with the pipe in a pipe, and have it stay put when you stop it in any position. Don't want it moving around either loaded or unloaded, and getting in your way when splitting. IMO
Don't think the pipe arrangement will make it very hard to swing with just a 100-200 # block of wood on it.

i think ill try the "pipe in a pipe swivel" it will save me some time running around to find a stub axle and hub

Oh.... I think you mean "pivot". I thought you wanted a swivel in a chain.
I used a pipe inna pipe when I built my windmill. I had a bearing that had an inner race that protruded a bit wider than the rest of the bearing ( for the set screws). This part went against the cap and the inner pipe rested against the outer race. Be sure to drill a hole for a grease zerk in the upper portion as it will take a considerable lateral load.
Instead of a bearing,you could use a steel ball for the inner pipe to rest on. Don't forget a drain hole...don't want rainwater freezing in there.

it is a Pickup/small Truck Crane but you can use it wherever you want.
I have one of this Crane and it very simple constructed and easy to copy if you will build it yourself.

The Swivel is only a Tube in Tube solution but it works good with loads up to 300 kg on the full extended Liftarm.
