Need some serial number help on Massey 240

I had two Massey 240's stolen from my farm a few weeks ago, I have owned both of these tractor sense new in 1988 & 89. I tracked one of my tractors down yesterday and called the state police when they came out the serial # tag has freshly been removed from the tractor and the guy that had it claims he has owned the tractor for a couple years. They impounded the tractor and said I could not have it back until the serial # could be verified. I have owned these tractors for 25 years and they both have over 12000 hours on them. I told them 15 different ways I could prove they are my tractors I also have pics of the tractor. But they still insist that serial # must be verified. So my question is does anyone know of a hidden serial # on the early 240's? I have a couple of 1997 240's and they have the number stamped on top of transmission housing but this 88 is not stamped there. thanks for any help

Do you have the original owners manual / paperwork and if so was the motor ser. # written down in there when you bought it. perhaps Massey can help with another # location

I do not have original owners manual, I do think I might have original invoice for tractor, but I am going to have to go through a lot of old dusty tax records to find it. I have service records from new on tractor all hand written so state police say they are of no value?????? I don't believe Massey will be of much help unless they hide a serial # some where on the tractor and so far as I can tell this did not happen until 97

Get a hold of customer service by e-mail to see how far back they keep the records. If Massey was still Massey they would have the information but I don't know since AGCO took over. I have had good luck getting information by e-mail and all my questions are always odd ball.

How sad that you are first victimized by the theft and now again by the very people/agency that are there to "Serve and Protect." We own a Massey and like JerryG stated, we find them very helpful so hopefully they can assist.
