Buying Advice Need some advice, LD3940 ? LD4400

Hello,

I was hoping someone could give me some advise on the type of tractor I should look at - I am thinking about a 3940, but I have been seeing and hearing to get a 4400, so I am really confused..

My situation is I have 2 pieces of land, 6 acres and 60 acres, the 6 acres is my home, and I need the backhoe/loader for moving dirt around, driveway maintance, taking down a few trees, doing dig work, like on my curves and valleys, I have a one acre poind and a per-filter sentiment water hole for the pond that I need the backhoe to remove dirt that builds up. On my 60 acre plot, it will be more driveway maintenance, general cleanup, moving a tree once in a while and clearning debris - and I also needed something that is pretty transportable, and have been told to get something in the 39-45HP and it is easy to transport and has HP to do most of the tasks I need.

I also need to get a tractor that I could add on, e.g., I will also need (later on) to add a

Bushhog
Grapple Hook
Possible Thumb to Backhoe
Rear Blade - but one that goes up and down, not just side to side, for all the curves and hills I have


Anyway, I was wondering would the 3940 or 4400 be a good fit? I do not need nothing fancy, and I would say, all I would really spend is a few hours a weekend on the machine.

My vote would be for the L3940. I really like the Grand L's!! Especially the HST+ !!

I was faced with the same decision and chose the L4400 HST. It is a strong machine. The Grand L 3940 is a good machine too. The 4400 is a basic tractor a little lighter in weight, without the whistles and bells. I dont care for the seat it is not the most comfortable. The hydrostatic trans is very easy to use and the motor is strong. So far the tractor is meeting all my expectations. I would recomend the top and tilt with the rear remote hydraulic outlets. The top and tilt allows for you to adjust the rear implement without leaving the seat.

I have an L4240 which is the next L size up from the L3940. The L4240 supports a little hefftier front end loader than the L3940. I also purchased the Kubota BH90 backhoe with the tractor which is a great combination. The tractor has good power for the backhoe and loader and I have been very satisfied. I have been using it to clear some pasture that has been over growing for 20 to 30 years. What i could not bush hog I attempt to move with the front loader. What I can't pull out with the loader I then try to dig out with the back hoe. If I have to chainsaw then the loader with the tooth bar helps move brush.
I transport my tractor on a bumper pull 12,000 lb tailer which pulls nicely with my 3/4 ton pickup. I did purchase the HST model for ease of use with the loader and for moving around the trees on the property which is wooded and fairly tight in places.
I am not familar with the 4400 but read good things about it. The L's do have some 'bells and whistles that make it comfortable and easy to operate. Look at the specs on the tractors you look at and then test drive to see which you feel more comfortable on.

Basic tractor needs are met with the 4400. The L3940 is a more capable tractor with more weight and a lot more features. But more $$. From what you stated as needs, either will work fine. It's back in your court to try them both and see which you like better.
