As the title says...

One of ths tractors at work, an '86 L2850 mfwd with woods loader, needs some wiring repairs under the hood. Seems the entire harness has been spliced... rumors of a fire at one point... owners late son's name is mentioned... both as cause of fire/dents, etc, as well as repairs. I knew him, we grew up together, but he's been gone over a dozen years, so any repairs he made need redone. Bossman mentioned completely new harness. I looked online and found nothing. Not even a part number at kubotas website. But I am also terrible at finding things online.

Anybody have any ideas? Or am I gonna be spending a few days next week with a volt meter, soldering gun, and heat shrink tubing?

Thanks for the link... but thats what I found before I posted this thread and all it offers is basic stuff like block heaters and batteries.

Regardless... looks like I will just be repairing the harness we have. I started on it yesterday, have a nice work station set up with the factory wiring diagram on the desk top covered by a sheet of glass so I can work on top of it with no fear of damage to the diagram, and solder doesn't stick to the glass.

Started by taking the loader off, and getting the ol beast in the garage... and its a beast!

Got the new starter on... that was easy. Pulled off the sheetmetal from the dash forward. Removed the wiring harness from the connector by the starter forward. Chopped a nice chunk of wiring harness out of an old volvo wagon out back for repair materials, dug my heat shrink tube and soldering gun outta my truck and got set up at my 'desk'.

There is a fuseable link near the starter that may also be damaged. I would like to replace it with a std fuse or circuit breaker but will have to wait till monday to figure that one out...

Have a nice weekend. I will update this thread with progress.

You probably aren't opening the full electrical section. Click on "electrical system" and when the individual electrical parts window page opens, click on the electrical system "+" on the left hand menu again. Full wire harness diagrams and part numbers will load. Each individual wire and complete sectional harness assembly is shown as numbered part ( assumedly available from the dealer). For instance, I didn't examine it closely but it appears part # 32430-31440 is the coupling harness for all elec. systems under the hood. I assume the fuseable link by starter is ref. number 100 part # 38430-34530

I have a L3650 which is the same era/design/etc... and the same front axle, if you ever have to part it out I'll buy the front axle :p

The wiring harnesses on these tractors were pretty primitive and there are few electrical functions on it. I've had to make a lot of changes and I still have an intermittent short I have to figure out.

My guess is the harness itself is NLA, but even if it's not it would be big $$. I'd recommend building your own. It's quite simple and there are a lot of improvements to be made - new fuse box with room for some additional fuses. The original relay sockets go bad and the relays are odd and difficult to find... I've replaced mine with standard automotive relays and sockets.

The fusible link I believe is what powers the dashboard and accessories... it should definitely have been a fuse new from the factory!

BTW... that seems to have a subframe backhoe, or at least the subframe is there for one. Does it connect to the loader mounts? If not, I'd be a bit careful with the loader for heavy work as the factory design tied the loader mounts back to the rear axle.

I only got to work on the harness for about 2 hours yeasterday, continuing with extending damaged wires. I was able to fine some auto-reset circuit breakers at the auto parts store that I think will be ok to replace the fuseable link.

Yes, the harness is very simple, by comparison to any modern vehicle. I cut out the wiring harness of a 1995 Ford F150 before I took it for junk to salvage the wire for additional materials for this repair. Glad I dont have to repair the ford!

Yes thats a backhoe sub frame. Yes the loader is tied into it. Backhoe is getting closer to the top of the list of things to fix. Was purchased about 4 years ago, had been sitting in a field for years, cyl needed rebuilt. Needs reassembled, been sitting out back in a crumpled heap for too long.

Got the harness reinstalled but haven't tried it yet...happy with how it turned out. Earlier in the day I ordered a new fuel shut off solinode from Messic's... be here tomorrow they say.
