Case 480CK Construction King John Deere JD 400
A data tag on my tractor identifies the machine as a Case Model 480CK, Number 8659673. What year was this machine manufactured and most critically where can I find a wiring diagram.

If can locate the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and decode the numbers and letters it will provide you with the year of manufacture.

There is plenty of decoding information available on-line for VIN's.

I've attached a document that may or may not help.

There appears to be plenty of images of wiring diagrams available if you Google it. There also appears to be serial number information on-line as well.

If you can find a. OEM Service/Repair manual for it ( usuaslly on ebay is the best place) they have very good wiring diagrams. I'd offer to copy mine, and send to you, but there are many pages of them. You'll more than likely need one for other repairs, and are money we'll spent. I got a nearly new one on ebay for around $75.

I found a tag on the frame of the tractor that reads 26LDR 5002353. If this number is the VIN then this tractor was manufactured in 1946. I ordered a ignition rebuild kit from All State Ag Parts P/N 105290. The points in this kit is a mirror image of the old points removed from the tractor. Can anyone advise me how to get the correct points.

Case serial numbers in the range from 8650001 – 8673000 represent tractors that have been built in 1970.

Yours at 8659673 falls within this range.

Any Case dealer should have database access with information on your VIN now that you know what the VIN is.

Click on this link to Case Construction:Official Case Construction Equipment Online Parts Store and Parts Look Up. Parts for Case Equipment and Construction Equipment. Parts Store for Case Wheel Loaders, Case Excavators, Case Skid Steers, Case Original Parts. It will show you an exploded view of one of the distributors used on the 480CK models. If you click on the "next page" at the top of that view, it will show the other. One is an Auto-Lite, the other is a Prestolite distributor. The easiest way to tell which is which, is to look and see if the tachometer is driven from the distributor. If it is, it is an Auto-Lite, if not, Prestolite.

In each exploded view, it also shows the contact point set parts number, along with the, condenser, rotor button, and cap. None interchange between these distributors. Be forewarned, the Prestolite parts are about 2X the cost of the one's for the Auto-Lite. I just checked Case IH Agriculture, and the contact set alone is $30.00. Case Construction are probably 10% higher. You should be able to get them at an auto parts store, for less than $25.

Use the part numbers to find what you are looking for. If you want to shop for aftermarket prices, enter that part number in a good search engine such as Google.

The old Case 310B I had, used the Prestolite distributor, and I got the complete cap, rotor button, contact set, and condenser at O'Reilly's. Contact set was around $22, but that was 10 years ago. Cap was even more.

My tractor has a gasoline powered 148B engine. Where does one find the thermostat on this engine?

Well I've pegged my Fun-Meter. The head has been removed and is being overhauled. I decided to replace a leaking front oil seal while the head is being refurbished. A major discovery is that the front pulley does not have enough clearance to come off the crankshaft. What is the best why to get clearance between the engine and the massive hunk of metal that the front axle is attached? Many expletives have been avoided.

There appears to be a groove worn into the pulley by the old seal. I've been led to believe that the pulley can be fitted with a sleeve and a larger diameter seal. Has anyone had any experience with this technique?

This is where some pictures really come in handy. I really don't want to insult mine, or you intelligence, but I'm assuming you've removed the flex drive plate, the hydraulic pump drive shaft hooks to, on the front of the crankshaft pulley. While I have not had to remove the pulley on my 480C, I have a on the old 310B with gas engine, and there was more than ample room to get the pulley out.

I looked in my service manual, which happens to be laying right beside me, in the photo's such as they are, it shows removing the pulley while in the machine. On the other hand, it appears the whole front end is wide open, and we both know that's not right.

Other than removing the motor mount bolts, and transmission mount bolts, then raising the front of the engine enough to clear the front end casting, I don't see how you can do it any other way.

As for fixing the groove, from the crank seal, there are aftermarket kits that use a Speedi-Sleeve to fix that. This one will run you $56, the seal to match is $13. Although at this vendor, they appear to be out of stock. https://www.epsstore.com/index.php/engine-exhaust/crankshaft/a155893.html It shouldn't be too hard to find another vendor though, that does have them in stock.
