I just purchased a new tractor for my house. After a lot of research and budgeting I settled on a Ford 3400 Gas with a 730 loader. I found a 1965 gas job that looks like it has very very low hours. The tach fell down over the hour meter so I don稚 know the actual hours but the tractor looks like a low hour machine. It has everything still in place, every factory light, wire, wire holder, even the covers for the brake adjusters are in place and never been removed!
I want to go through the tractor and do all maintenance. I am going to start at the front and work back.
First on the chopping block is the coolant system. The only part that appears to be replaced was the water pump. The coolant looks good and clean but I am going to change out the coolant. I know some of these had cavitation issue in the diesels and they use the same blocks for the gas jobs. I plan on dumping the coolant and replacing with regular green Prestone. While I am in the coolant system, should I replace the thermostat? I don稚 know the age of the one in the tractor.
Also the tempo gauge pins in the red. This happens with the key on and the engine cold. I am assuming either a grounded wire or bad sender. I will run these issues out with my coolant flush.
Is there anything else I should look at or replace during my coolant service?
