I plan to build a logging arch this winter. A friend recently donated a frankentrailer to the cause. He got it from a friend of a friend who nobody seems to remember now. I need help IDing the old car/truck V8 hub cap snapped on one of the wheels so I can figure out what kind of wheel hub assembly I have so I can figure out what my options are for replacement rims/bearings/tires ... or if I should just cut it up for scrap and get an axle with hubs from the salvage yard:

Thanks - you guys are my Encylopedia Tractorica.

Does it matter ? When it breaks down, you toss it in the scrap bin and get another one from the scrapyard.... cheaper than a hub bearing anyways...

Not sure how much you plan to run it when it's built, if it were allot maybe Renze's idea would be the best at the time of failure. If it were me, I'd take it apart now and pack the bearings that are in it and while I had it apart I'd see if there were any numbers stamped on them. At least that way you'd know what the bearing/race might be for replacement. I'm lucky enough to have an Industrial Bearing close to where I work, they've always been able to identify whatever it was that I dragged in to them. Good Luck-DTS

It's been a while and I'm sure some Ford guys will correct me if I'm wrong, but they look like about '37-'38 Ford. Bearings etc. are easily available and any Ford/Lincoln/Mercury wheels from Model A on up to '48 should fit. I believe later model (into 70's at least) Lincoln, larger Mercury and some Jeep CJ's work also. Just measure the bolt pattern and you can check them out on tire sites like tire rack and discount tire.

You guys are good. Based on your responses, I searched "Ford V8 hub cap" on e-bay and got a match (asking $59!):

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

So if the listing is accurate, it's a 1939 39 Ford Deluxe V8 Hubcap 16" Wheel

The rim on the other side has rusted so badly that you can peel it away from the tire's bead. So now I know what kind of wheels & tires to look for - thanks for the help. The bearings spin well, and I will take them apart & repack them with fresh grease. The hubs are complete, with the original solid drop axle that I'm thinking of cutting the middle out of. It doesn't have to roll fast or corner at speed, just has to be able to roll heavy for short trips through the woods.
