Help,
I am in need of some ideas for storing my 10 or so 3pt and fel attachements. I have decided to build a 4 car gargae structure next to my business for the sole purpose of storing my trailer, tractor and all of it's little friends(toys) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif, The garage is 38' wide and 32' deep with 2 - 16' wide garage doors and 1 side service door. I remember reading a thread some time ago about how people have built or assembled steel and or wood storage shelves with some of them being stacked to minimize space. But, I have had no luck finding any searches here on TBN, I must not be using the right words for the search. Any help or personal recommendations or experiences would be greatly appreciated. The garage is framed in and will be roofed this weekend. The concrete contractors will be pouring the floor next week. It will not be insulated or heated this year but hopefully in the future - don't want the wife to think I will be spending a lot of time up there. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I have about 2 weeks before I need to start moving the stuff in. I have seen some heavy 14 gauge gorilla shelving at Menards that goes up to 7' high, 8' wide but only 30 inches deep. What about using 4x4s or 6x6s? My biggest implements are the 6' tiller, 6' brush hog, 6' box blade, 7' rear blade and 4n1 bucket. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jerry

Re: Need help/ideas for storage/shelving of implem

A friend of mine uses commercial type shelving like I've seen in Home Depot (the stuff not for sale) to store his implements.
I have used 2x4s and 3/4" plywood to make shelving that was attached to the garage wall and garage roof to store car parts including engines and transmissions. Very strong but simple to make. All joints were glued and screwed together.

I got an idea from driving by the local 'bota dealer. ONe day, there were several of what looked like industrial metal shelves laying by the road with a sign that said "Free". Upon closer inspection, they were the metal frames of what they ship the unassembled kubota tractors in. They weren't quite a heavy duty as the industrial shelves used in warehouses, but they were priced right, and with reinforcement/bracing would easily hold 3 ph implements (heavy ones on the bottom, please). Just a thought.

Look for info on pallet racks. Those are the shelving systems that the Home Depots, Lowes, Sam's Clubs, etc. use. I've seen listing for uprights that can vary from 96" to 300" so depending on how high you want to go you may want to refigure the ceiling height. An 8' height may not work.

If you live near a large metropolitan area, it shouldn't be difficult to find a source for used pallet racking. Going to vertical storage saves a lot of room. Besides if you go high enough that you're beyond loader height you've got a good reason to justify buying a forklift. After all, you can't have too many toys.

The least expensive might be using 2x4's and 3/4 OSB. This would work alright. I'd use the 2x4's to make 4x4 I.E. a king stud configuration. Set your OSB on it then add the next king stud. Also add 2x4's across the front and back as well so it doesn't bow. Might want one across the middle as well depending on loading. You could use joist hangers, block it or glue/peg it together etc..

If you have a bunch of steel laying around, a welder or can get enough scrap for free. That may be the way to go.

The easiest would probably be the industrial strenght version of the steel shelving.

You can get used pallet shelving from Welter Storage Equipment, in Des Moines. 515-270-8488

They have other locations in Iowa (Cedar Rapids?)....call and ask

I've purchased a lot from them...good people to work with.( They even let me "trade in" short crossbeams for longer ones)

Often times pallet racking can be had at auctions. Sometimes you need to buy a lot, which would be too much for your implements, but occasionally you can buy just a little pile.

I ran out of floor space to store my attachments. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Made 2 shelves a couple of weeks ago. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

One in the barn another one under my lean-to. Attached is a picture of the one in barn. It is 24' long X 4' wide X 5' high.
