Guys,

My grandpa has a 1929 General Purpose JD sitting in a old barn, it's been sitting there since the early 90s, my dads 1950 Case SC was in the same barn, I pulled that out and put it in my barn and my dad and I got it running. But my grandpa said no to the JD because it had bad rings in the motor.

So my question is how hard of a job would it be? How much would it cost to fix and how do I do it?

I'm hoping if I learn how to do it and get a game plan he might let me pull it out of its grave, put it in my concrete floored barn and let me get my hands on the old girl. He says he knows a guy that restores them and he was gonna ship it to them to restore but honestly I don't see that happening. I already saved the Case from rotting further, I need to save the JD also.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

John

The case just after we pulled it out of the barn.

The Case SC looks to be in very good condition for its age. Does yours have the Eagle hitch and or rear scv valve?

My dad bought one back in 1966-7, that was our first tractor. That is where I started being interested in tractors.

My suggestion would be to abide by Grandpa's decision.. sounds like the old GP is some personal to him and a possession, or is just his gut feeling coming out. My advice as a grandpa (and a "great" grandpa twice too). We still like our things we've accumulated over many years.

Nice looking case.

Meh lol it's been sitting in the barn longer than the case was, that was the 3rd time ever seeing either tractors in my lifetime and the first time I heard the case run was at my house after pulling it with my 4320 for about 500 yards.

Both tractors were restored before they were put to bed in that old sheep barn, the JD smoked like a chimney when my grandpa was hauling it to shows he said in the late 80’s maybe early 90’s.

My grandpa is in his late 80’s now, I just wanted to have him see it run before he passes away. As his health declines, projects like the tractors get put on the back burner. I don't think he will ever see it run again.

It's got hydraulics in the rear, just one scv I believe but it's sports the 2 pt hitch lol

JD 2 cylinders are some of the easier engines to overhaul. One would need remove cyl head and cover over crankshaft to remove rod bolt nuts then push pistons out. One nice thing about JD 2 cyl OH is no oil will drip on you while you're renewing the engine. If block could just require honing then only parts needed would be piston rings & gasket set. if block requires boring then it would have to be removed.
