Ok.. I know some of you guys here know the in's and out's of filter selection and specifications, so i need some help here.

On my 1975 ford 5000, I've been using a napa 1452 filter.. It's what I've got penciled in my owners manual from the previous owner. It spins on fine.. etc.

Now.. I got to looking at a few online cross reff sites,a nd when i put in a ford 5000, other filter numbers are coming up.. for instance.. napa shows a 1714 ( for my year ).. car quest shows an 85714 ( same as the napa filter..direct cross )..

Now I'm wondering if I am using the correct filter...

Anyone know the difference between the 1452 I'm using, and the 1714 that is specified.

The one thing that bothers me is that napa and car quest both also show a fuel filter number that is WRONG for my 5000 ( they also show the wrong filter for my 7610s as well ), and they both show an inner and outter air fitler for my 5000. thing is.. the 5000 came with an oil bath air fitler, and did not use paper filters till the 5600 in 1976.. so.. that kinda sheds some doubt on the valadity of the napa and carquest databases in my opinion..

any info? I don't want to ruin my engine..

According to my Napa book.
The 1714 is slightly longer and slightly bigger in diameter. As long as you have the room for the larger filter this shouldn't be an issue.
The threads are the same and the Gasket dementions are the same on the 1714 and the 1452.
Both filters have anti drain back valves.
The 1714 has a by pass valve setting of 16 PSI.
The 1452 has a by pass valve setting of 12-15 PSI.

I checked my Fleetguard catalog and neither of the napa numbers cross to a Fleetguard that is a replacement for the original Ford filter.

Do you by chance have the Ford part number in your manual that it calls for. It should look something like D8PJ6714AA. If you have the original Ford part number I can look it up and see what the exact spec's are. The main difference is other than size is going to be the BPV (bypass valve) preasure rating. You should make sure to use the correct filter that has the correct BPV preasure rating.

Here is some more info, I just talked to a friend that was a ford parts counterperson in a previous life, and he said he sold baldwin bt111 in place of the ford oem filter due to price. I check and a bt111 crosses to a napa 1452, as well as a fram ph8a... Interestingly enough.. the ph8a crosses to a napa 1515 , motorcraft fl1a .. etc. The fl1a was the standard 1qt spin on that most of the gassers used.. like my ford NAA with spin on adapter, and my 850.. etc..

Funny how there is a chain of crossovers.. and strangely enough.. there are more than one cross per manufacturer.. for instance.. it appears that a 1515, 1714, and 1452 all will fit this application.

Depending on how much bigger the 1714 is, I don't know if it will fit. The oil sending unit is right behind the oil fitler.. right now there is about 1/2" clearance between the sending unit wire terminal ( flat sideways spade ) and the filter body.... you have to be carefull unscrewinthe filter that you don't run into the sending unit with your hand or a filter wrench.. etc..

thanks for the filter specs. As soon as i find my 5000 shop manual, I'll lookup the correct ford spin on number.

Some times the difference is not visable. It can be different internally. Different bypass valve preasures, different micron rating's, and the construction of the filter. There are probably hundreds of filters that would "fit" your tractor since the 3/4-16 UNF-2B filter base is very common but only the direct cross reference from the factory one is the correct one. It's alway's best to use a filter that is a direct cross reference to the original and not a cross to a cross to a cross reference. Also some times companies have a upgrade filter. This is usually either a synthetic filter media, larger capacity or both.

As soon as I find the ford number, I'll post it and see what we get.

The oe number is 86546614

ironically, it appears to cross over to both a fram8a and a napa 1452.. even though napa's application chart shows a 1714.. weird.. but then again napa's application chart shows 2 air fitlers ( paper inner and outter ) for my OIL BATH air cleaner system.. so i guess napa's application chart is bogus..

Ok, the 86546614 would be a FORD D8PJ6714AA filter.

Data on the Napa 1714 Part Detail This one is used and listed for tractors

Data on the Napa 1452 Part Detail It looks like this one IS NOT listed as a tractor filter in the product description and I would not use it on my tractor. HOWEVER!!! Using the wonderful Wix filter cross reference tool it list this one as the cross for the 86546614.

The Fleetguard direct crossover is http://www.cumminsfiltration.com/fleet/en/catalog/part_search.jsp?searchParts=LF3313

Personally I'm a Fleetguard (owned by Cummins engine) filter man. It's the only thing I use. I also never have problems crossing to their filters and this is a perfect example of that.

Here is even some more muddier info obtained from napa / wix: the 1452 does appear to have some tractor applications.. also to further complicate matters, the ford 5000 i slisted as using the 1714, yet the 555, 5600, 6600, and 6700 are all listed as using the 1452 filter ( and the 5000 is the only non turbo of the group.. ) .. weird.

I emailed wix/napa to ask them about the apparent discrepencies in their crossover charts and application charts..

According to the WIX filters Master Catalog:
NAA..............51452
850..............51775
5000 (late)..... 51714
Automotive Use.. 51515

Some info:

51452... 5.178"HI, 3.660"DIA Bypass 12-15 PSI
51515... 5.178"HI, 3.660"DIA Bypass 08-11 PSI
51714... 6.605"HI, 4.282"DIA Bypass 16 PSI
51775... 5.178"HI, 3.660"DIA Bypass 08-11 PSI

ALL 4 have an anti-drainback valve.

ALL 4 have 3/4-16 threads.

ALL 4 have a gasket OD of 2.834".

ALL APPEAR to have the same "media".
