Need an Optima (or other gel-cell) Battery

Dimensions of the existing J-D "Strongbox":

FYI: Optima isn't a gel-cel, it is an absorbed electrolyte

The shortest length available in an Optima is 9 5/16" long X 6 3/4" wide by 7 5/8" tall [Group 25 (8025-160) Red Top].

The narrowest is 9 5/16 long by 5 1/16" wide by 8 15/16" tall [Group D51 (8071-167) Yellow Top]

Is there a label that lists the "Group Size" on your existing battery? That may help me look up other brands as I only have the physical measurements for Optima at hand currently.

I just replaced my JD Strongbox ST, group size 22NF with an Optima yellow top D51R battery. It required a custom made bracket to hold it in place but I felt much better spending an extra $7 for the Optima compared to the JD battery given the many benefits of AGM batteries.

The dimensions of the Optima battery are measured at the top where is has an overhang. The base measurements are smaller if that helps.

The Optima only has 450 cold cranking amps compared to 500 on the Deere but I was willing to take a chance on losing a few CCA's.

Oh yeah, I bought the battery at an auto parts store. I think it was Auto Zone.

FWIW, I just saw the Optima D51R YellowTop at Amazon for $153.73 with free super saver shipping, a pretty good price it would seem--usually seeing about $166 delivered. BTW, I have no idea if that's the model you need for your application, RWEST, just trying to be helpful if possible.

I was hoping the Red Top 25 would work, but there just isn't enough width in there - about 6" is all I can go. Looks like the Yellow Top 51 it will be.

jdparts.com lists it as a BCI group 45. I was never able to get an Optima to fit my 855. The battery guy described that one as a "Honda" car battery in size. In N.FLorida, I don't have any trouble starting it, but I sure do like the Optimas. I use their 6 volt model in my two older tractros, JD 70 Diesel and VAC Case, and they have performed great over the past four years. Never a seep or a weep, you can even mount them upside down I am told, but have not gone to that extreme.
