Hi Guys

I had a thread entitled "BUILDING GARAGE BY MYSELF NEED HELP" the thread is kind of old now so I post new one, hope that`s OK?

I am just at the point where I have everything done accept siding, fascia, eves trough.

Have never done any of this before, I have a roll of house wrap, I have a huge pile of 1x4 x 8 strapping, and I have quite a bit of flashing its in 8 foot lengths about 1x4.

Obviously the siding does not go right on the OSB sheathing, i SUSPECT NOW that I missed some flashing under the first row of shingles, to late for that now, am guessing that it was not even used in the old days so I suspect garage will manage without it.

At any rate trying to figure out where all the flashing goes, I have been googling, Perhaps some on top of concrete blocks at bottom of wall? around doors and windows and 16x7 garage door.

The flashing has one end that would/could fit over the end of plywood going into eve trough, but like I said to late for that part, perhaps the bottom row of siding goes into the slot on the flashing?

Any help would be great, so again all I have left is the 1x4 strapping, the roll of house wrap and the flashing lengths and siding. Could anybody tell me how and in what order this all goes on.

To be honest I did not know what the 1x4 strapping was for until I saw a picture on a roll of tape that came with package. Shows what looks to be housewrap with 1x4 strapping on top, so I guess you cant just put siding flat on sheeting and house wrap? LOOKS like I have to put siding over strapping, is that necessary?

Cant I just staple house wrap and then put siding on?

I guess some of the flashing is to protect the sil?

Thanks if anybody cares to lend a hand. I can not ask locally as there was no permits , I had m,y reasons

Hiya

Pictures would help.

What type of siding?

What type of windows??--most are self flashing if installed correctly

If your shingles are still flexible, you should be able to install the drip edge flashing.

A general rule of thumb for flashing, is you need to think like water, by that I mean you want your want your impermeable elements (flashing, house wrap, some types of siding) to overlap and the joints always to face down.

Thanks for your response, hope these few pics give you an idea. I think doors and windows are fine, just that I have about 24- 8 foot lengths of the flashing (all the same) just wondering what to do with it all?

I hear what you are saying on the shingle, I think now that I can get the flashing on under the starter row. any thoughts on the other spots? Thanks :)

oh and the garage is 20x24

siding is vinyl I tacked a piece on the front just to give idea

The house wrap is installed before windows and doors are installed. Flashing over doors and windows. As mentioned some vinyl windows are self flashing. Grace Vycor or equivalent is nice around windows and doors. http://www.na.graceconstruction.com/Window_and_Door_Flashings/download/TP-083N-Plus_3.pdf You should have starter strips for the siding that measures 1.5 to 2" in width. Vinyl siding is nailed to OSB after house wrap is installed using aluminum nails although some use electro-galvanized nails that are not nailed tight to wall to allow expansion and contraction. You can find install sheets for vinyl siding with a Google search.

Some people do a flashing between concrete and pressure treated sill plates believing that it a termite barrier.

I like drip edge all around my barn roof and my house roof. ColorPlus Flashing

The metal is a starter strip for siding, snap a level line around bottom of wall to were the starter will hang below the foundation about an inch. The vinyl siding snaps on the starter strip and nails on the plywood wall, but don't nail to tightly. The house wrap should go on before windows are installed but you can get some tyvek tape and apply around them. You also need J channel to wrap windows and door trim and outside corners for your four corners. If you are enclosing your soffit you will need vented soffit panels and fascia wrap either pre-bent or borrow a aluminum brake to bend fascia cover.

The metal is a starter strip for siding,
Sure it's not a drip edge for roof shingles, that's what I've used it for, could be a multiuse I guess. For drip edge, you flip it over from the way you've got it held so the long edge goes up under the starter strip :2cents:......Mike

Yeah it looks more like vinyl starter strip. It also looks like you forgot to put drip edge on the roof along with alum over the fascia, unless you are just going to paint it. Hard to tell from the pics

Thank You

As suggested I managed to get the drip edge ion today, slid it under starter shingles. Yes I have fascia just have not put it up yet. The package I got for 5 grand almost exactly came with everything, including nails/tape, you name it.

Thanks all for responding :)

Flashing is there to shed water.

The simplest way to figure out if you're doing it right - is to imagine that water is flowing over the surface of whatever object it is that you're trying to flash.

If you can imagine the water getting in behind the flashing - and not flowing over it - then you're doing it wrong.
