I am looking into a Ford 1500 tractor for sale. The owner is 2nd owner of the tractor and he has owned it for about 11 years. It has FEL (770) and rear back blade. The question is he is advertising it as a 1984 model. According to Machinery link.com, they did not make this tractor for those years, 1979-1982. He also states that it is rated at 23HP instead of the 17 as stated on the website. I tried the link to look it up by the Serial Number but I couldnt find any matching numbers for either year. The tractor does look to have the original paint with the 1500 decals on it. Meter states only 270hrs on this tractor. Not sure if its accurate. Did not want to make the owner any more upset. He seemed pretty insistent that his specs were correct.

Any Help would be appreciated.

Unless it is being sold really low and is in sound shape I would stay away from it. 270 hours is way low for a tractor that age especially if it had to be repainted. Show the guy the reports from tractordata.com and machinerylink.com and if he gets upset walk.

Can we ask how much he is asking??

He is asking $6300 or best offer. I thought the price was high as well. Tractor is in good shape, and he says it has been garage kept since he has had it. It does not need new paint. It looks in good condition. It sounds good to hear it run. I did not drive it at this time as I want to take my time, and make a good decision. I am still contemplating between buying used or new, or at least newer?

I mis read your original post. I thought you said it did not have the original decals on it. Get a serial number off of it and call your local Ford/New Holland Dealer. They can tell you what year it was by the serial number. You can go to www.ytmag.com and find values of tractors to give you an idea.

The hp/age numbers from the previous post look dead on.

Also.. I found a site that listed the original purchase price for that machine at 6745$ .. so I'd guess he's asking too much!

I agree with the asking price to be too high, even though on a couple of occasions I sold Ford New Holland tractors for more than I paid for them while they were still in production and the retail had risen. Even though many on this board seem to think model year is important, at least to my dealer it's only hours that matter for value.. A 6 year old tractor with low hours can be worth more than a 2 year old with high hours if they are both current models. I would be concerned about parts availability on a 1500. Like I've said before, ask people like RickB and Spencer200 about their experiences in getting parts. I know that friends who have these older machines, have had to search far and wide and pay real premium prices to get parts. That may not be the case for the 1500. Also check into front axle strength. Again my memory may not serve me right, but I seem to remember that was one thing they fixed between 1500 and 1510.

The 1500 is a good little machine and if priced right and if it has good parts availability it will serve you well.

$6300 is a bit high for a 1500 with loader and back blade. $5000. is a bit more in line. The meter on these units roll back to 000 after 999 hours and start over, no way to tell how many times it has went around. It is 17PTO HP. As for the year, some people seem to think it denotes the year it was sold and not the year of production. The correct year of a unit is its build date. Another thing, I am not sure that a 1500 has power steering. With a loader, power steering or power assist steering is a must.

I've been looking at a 1500 myself (I'm also a newbie to the board). One with a Flail mower, under 1000 hours, 900+ I beleieve; he is asking $5k for it.

I think he told me it was a 24 hp though... not that he couldn't be wrong...
