Going through some things being brought back down from my fathers place.

Completely forgot all about this obsolete caliber. Well, there is one company that still makes it out of country, but a $23/50 rounds, the .17 ammo is looking better, added to the fact that we don't have the rifle anymore to boot.

Sigarms,
Those were actually very accurate - maybe more so than the .17HMR. Best I can remember they were discontinued due to folks trying to use them on big game and/or cost versus the .22 and .22 mag. The rifles can be picked up for less than several boxes of ammo at gun shows. The last factory ammo I saw ran about $ 50 per 50 rnds.

I actually have something nearly as obsolete. A TC contender barrel in 256 Win Mag. Some of these not so popular calibers are pretty interesting.
If I remember correctly the 5MM was really a good round for its intended purpose. Historically any round introduced with a metric designation has been a hard sell in the US. The 7MM Rem Mag is the first round that I can think of that really got popular with the MM label.

Ironically, the other day I read a small article where two gun companies are going to bring out a model for the 5mm.

They will need to work on the price of the ammo though. $23 for 50 rounds is pretty steep for a rimfire compared to the price and ballistics of a .17

I still have my 5mm rem mag..

ammo is way cheaper than what you post.

it's in new production by a co called? centurion.. I think.

something like 15$ per 50rnd box... not too bad compared to many other ammo prices.

i just picked up 5 boxes the other day..

You're correct, it is cheaper than I posted. Older periodical in the reading room, and that article caught my eye and that was the price they had listed. The ammo is Centurion, but FYI it is actually made by Aguila (why I thought it was overseas).

The important issue is that it is in production.. 5mm mag is a decent round for those situation where 22lr is to light.. but you atill want a good varmint round.. but not a huge$ rifle for something like 22-250.. etc..

Good Mornin Chris,
When I first bought my 22-250 I was only spending about $10 to $12 on a box of 20, Hornady etc. Then it seems like overnight those rounds went out of sight ! :(

Yep.. some ammo is crazy.. hornady 350gr in 500S&Wmag is 58$/20rnds :(
