Tractor
Kubota GL3240
I will need a rotary cutter for the tractor I getting. The local Kubota dealer has Landpride cutters. He recommended at RCR1272 with a slip clutch. He priced it at #1,650.

Are these cutters good and is this a good price?

That RCR1272 is a 72" cutter. Make sure the tractor you buy can handle it. You'll want an absolute, rock bottom rating of 25 PTO HP minimum...more is better, of course.

As far as Land Pride being good quality...I've had a 60" Land Pride cutter for ten years now. It's showing it's age, but still runs like new. Land Pride does make excellent equipment.
I paid just under $1100 for that 60" cutter ten years ago...so the dealer's price isn't out of line

The tractor will have 25 PTO HP. I will not be doing any really heavy cutting. Mainly just grown up fields 2 to 3 feet tall. It they are taller I will just have to go slower I guess.

Land Pride makes excellent cutters as does Bush Hog and Woods; not familiar with other brands. I used an RCR2672 on my L5030 and really like it.

I would ask what the 25HP tractor is?

There is a VERY LARGE difference is the physical size/weight of 25HP tractors on the market today. A 6' cutter is going to be just too big for some of them, but not for others. So, what is the model of the tractor you are getting??

And all that said, Landpride does make excellent implements, BUT....I will say that I think the RCR12 series is not what I would spend $1600+ on. There are the lightest duty landpride cutters. That 6'er weighs UNDER 600lbs. Thats not very heavy duty. And the deck thickness is also only 12 guage.

Personally, I'd be looking at the 18 or 20 series at a MINIMUM.

I know others will will disagree, But I wouldnt spend $1650 on that light of a cutter when you can but a light duty KK or other cheap brand for less than half that cost.

And to really get the most for you money, look at some used ones. Decient medium-duty john deeres, bush-hog brand cutters, KK's, etc can be had on c-list all day long for under $500 in really good shape. At least in my area.

The tractor is an L3240. A guy at work has one I have run with a 6' cutter on it and it worked well.

I agree the $1650 is alot. I was priced a Tayor something cutter for $995.

I just saw a used 6' for $450 on craigslist. I am just scared of buying a wore out piece of junk.

If you are half-mechanically inclined at all, and have (or know someone that does) a welder, rotary cutters are simple to look over and simple to fix:thumbsup:

The Kubota L3240 is the Hercules of 25 HP tractors with a lift capacity of 2640 pounds 24 inches behind the lift point. You can put, weight wise, just about any 6 foot bushhog you can find on it. However turning it with 25 hp at the PTO in a "grown up field" is going to be your limiting factor. I find that fescue grass is the hardest thing to mow and keep the RPMs up. If your set on a 6 footer a light one with smaller blades/gearbox should be easier to turn but even still thats maxing it out. You can always make your 6 footer a 5 by just taking a 5 foot bite out of the next row but your still having to overcome the inertia of the longer blades on a 6 footer. A 5 footer will match your tractor better and let you mow at more than a crawl in 3 foot weeds. Mowing where your constantly fighting the lugging of the engine isn't much fun and isn't good for your tractor either. I think a light duty 5 foot mower would be a option you might want to look into as it would fit your tractors power best.

I'm looking for a rotary cutter myself, and so far every used one I've seen (maybe 15 or so) looks like it's ready for the scrap yard. I need a 5' or smaller for my tractor, and the use will be probably considered light duty. I love the LP stuff, it's top notch; but the prices may push me toward a KK or something.
