Anyone have a 2-1/16" - 16 thread die? I need one to repair thread damage on a JD model 50 crankshaft.

Thanks,
Daryl

Depending on how bad the threads are, might try a thread file

If the damage is extensive, a machine shop with a large lathe can recut the threads to match the existing threads. Match the pitch behind the damage and single point cut toward the end.

I tried a thread file with no luck. The shaft is just to hard for a file to repair the damage thread. I actually found a thread die on Ebay the correct size but it was a 12 TPI instead of 16. I am trying to avoid pulling the crankshaft out, but that may be the only way to get it repaired. I am not 100% sure a thread die will clear the threads up but wanted to try that before pulling the crankshaft. Thanks for the replies.

IF a thread file isnt touching it a die wont either. Was this a good brand thread file? or a cheapy HF?

Cranks shouldnt be too hard to cut with a file.

These silicon carbide/Crystolon stones will cut it. Check triangle shape - product # 4346A22

I have a pretty extensive catalog of machine tools and their accessories. 2 1/16-16 is a non-standard thread. 2 1/16-14 is. Are you sure of the thread OD and tpi? 2" OD comes in 8-12-16-and 20 TPI. A standard 2" die is $80 and jumps to $115 for a 2 1/16-14.

Do you have an industrial/machine production jobber/supplier in your city? They should be able to do a match up using the part with the female thread if it is a standard thread, otherwise it is a machine shop job. Around here just the set up fee for a one time job at a machine shop is $150-$200.
