Hi - This isn't "related" to tractors (of course, a lot of stuff in this forum - Related Topics - isn't either), but . . . am planning trip through northern Texas shortly. Kilgore (oil musuems etc), Houston (cattle, etc), and, Archer City (supposedly the town itself is the biggest used book store in the US). Any of you Texas folks have any suggestions for good places to visit - agricultural history museums, tractor museums, technology museums etc sort of along the general route above????
Thanks for any suggestions.

What time of year are you planning to come?
I dont know much about north east TX. I've only been thru there a few times. Texas is big and plenty to see. I think you can get a Travel guide at most of the major border tourist stops. I could help you if you want to travel towards central TX...Kyle

I'm confused. Did they move Houston to north Texas? The Houston-Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex- wow, that would be sompin.

If in the Amarillo area (Canyon, TX), go to the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum. Their oilfield exhibits are excellent!

Also, if you're near Amarillo area visit Palo Duro Canyon. It's breathtaking.

If you go to Ft. Worth there's lots of great places. The stockyards, Amon Carter museum, Kimbell art gallery, Will Rogers, cowgirl hall-of-fame to name a few.

Don't forget to fill your belly with BBQ. You're not allowed to leave the state until you've gorged yourself with brisket and ribs.

I am not from TX but I took a look at a map of Texas.

Kilgore - there are 2 of them, one east of Dallas and one southeast of San Antonio.

Houston - As the natives have indicated, is on the gulf

Archer City - northwest of Dallas

According to Street Atlas, it's 380 miles from Archer City to Houston.

I visited the Dallas/Ft. Worth area many years ago. All I recall is Billy Bobs and a place that cut the tie off anyone who was wearing one. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good ole Billy Bob's. And the place famous for cutting ties is Traildust.

I think they also have one in Tucson. If they don't, some restaurant is doing a real good imitation, because they got my tie hanging on the wall there! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

If you go to Kilgore, you might want to drive on to Jefferson. A very quaint town with lots of antiques. Or you could go to the pottery outlet at Marshall. There is a famous rose garden in Tyler. If all else fails, get a guide and go fishing at Lake Fork. It holds the state record for black bass.

A bad day fishing beats a good day working anytime /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

If you get there at the right time the rose gardens in Tyler are worth looking up.

Besides not being in North Texas I don't ever remember seeing a cow in Houston in the 26 years that I lived there! ---- except at the yearly rodeo that eveyone goes to see county singers.

Maybe if you tell us when you're coming, what your route will be, and how much time you have, we could tell you better. As someone mentioned, won't see much in the way of cattle in Houston or Dallas, but many small towns have weekly cattle auctions, and if you want to see big herds, you should see the feedlots in and around Hereford, TX. Now being a country boy who likes the wide open spaces instead of cities, but who lived and worked in Dallas for 30 years, I could never think of a reason for a tourist to come to Dallas, except maybe for the State Fair that starts the first weekend in October. However, I understand it's a pretty popular place with a lot of tourists. An article in today's newspaper mentioned 450,000 people a year who visit the Sixth Floor Museum (from which Lee Harvey Oswald shot President Kennedy). I understand the Holocaust Museum also draws large numbers of visitors, and I think Dallas has a pretty good zoo, art museum, etc.

If you're coming through here, send me a PM or private e-mail and let me know what your interests are and I'll try to provide as much information as I can.
