hi there, ive read with great interest the guy that built his own home-built compact tractor, i was very impressed with the build,so im going to of to the shed to build my own, i would be running a 4 cylinder car engine, but i want some serious low end grunt, i will be going up some serious steep hills and once ive used the car gearbox and then into a pair of 4x4 axles and then increased the size of the wheels im back to the start with the gear ratio's, i was looking at putting some kind of planetary gears or chain drive 5:1 between the engine and gearbox, but how would it be simply constructed....... hmmmm over to you geys to have a think over a beer and come up with feasable ideas, cheers guys for a great site.

I seen a 2wd Homemade tractor with two four speed transmission. You leave the first trans in low gear then use the 2nd to shift with. Yours will have a transferred case with a Low range. Maybe you can run build a small low range transmission out of a transferred case. Cut the 4x4 part off it so it a smaller. And have it sit in front of the 4x4 transferred case to get lower range. I hope this help because I like to try to build one someday.

i did think about running a chain from the engine side to a shaft outside the engine/gearbox, onto a shaft and then putting a large gear on the clutch, i could also use output from engine straight to a hydraulic pump

You would need a big pump to run it. Maybe you can find a hydrostatic pump out of a skidsteer then run a hydraulic motor on a chain drive to trans.

Here what I was think of building Utility ATV like the Bobcat toolcat. Having two sits would be nice for I can watch my son. And still can go hunting with it. I was thinking of using two S10 Blazer axles and front end. For all wheel steering and 4x4.
Why Toolcat? - Toolcat 5600 and 5610 Utility Work Machines - Bobcat Company

think you got the wrong end of the stick, i was going to run chain drive from the engine to the gearbox, and just run it to a seperate shaft for ease of construction, it wouldnt be powered by hydraulics, i just though it simple to draw off some power from the engine by utilising this lay shaft

I was think you might go that way. I'm not sure how strong the chain would be. Then you will still need a clutch. Again if you can take two transferred case and used one just for the low gearing and not for the 4x4 after the transmission and before the 2nd 4x4. Then have a 2nd one at the end of the drive train for the 4x4 then to axles. The clutch would work the same and transmission. You would not have to mess with the axles gearing.
Just try to help you get some ideals. This is what I was think of set up.

engine+clutch(housing)+transmission+low gear(1st transferred case)+4x4 transferred (2nd transferred case)+drive shift+axles

dual transfer cases R common for rock crawling to get real low grunt...

Do a google search on "dual transfer cases" there alot of parts and how to on it.

What about using the engine, auto tranny and half-shafts from a front wheel drive car. Mount it sideways so the axles point fore and aft then connect the axles to normal 4wd front and rear axles. This way you get your original tranny gearing plus an additional 4:1 or so from the 4x4 axles. You don't need the weight of a transfer case plus youve got full-time 4wd. If you can find old military or Willies axles they are about 5:1 and a little shorter than a full sized SUV. With the lighter weight of your finished vehicle the older axles should hold up OK.
If you can find an engine with fuel injection then you will eliminate a lot of carb problems stemming from fuel slosh and uneven ground as well.

nikb, while we all like projects and build your own it is better to have some machine shop experience or better yet own one. Just an opinion but why not find a good small tractor in need of restoration and maybe include some modifications to it? The end result would be a better return for all the money and hard work, you could have a good tractor.
