Nasdaq, my big, beautiful black cat, came home yesterday morning badly injured after tangling with something big. He has bite marks on his head and inside his mouth. Part of one front paw is missing and the remaining claws were torn out. All of his back claws were torn out and there's some dark brown fur matted in the bloody stumps.

Took him to the vet and was gratified to see that he felt good enough to fight against being examined. Also he seems to have a very healthy appetite. Lastly, with five dogs and two other cats all determined to keep him clean, there's little sign of infection.

Looks like my favorite cat used up a few of his lives, though! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif Guess it's time to start looking for dens in the woods again. Hate doing that, but after a dozen chickens and now nearly a cat...

So one paw and all of his claws are gone??? Wow! Poor fella! Must have been one heckofa fight for his very survival. I hope he at least did some damage to his oversized foe for all his pain and loss of claws.

He did not tangle with or get tangled in an alternator belt did he? I hate those cat grinders...

Pete,

Good luck on finding the den. I finally had to convert to indoor cats after losing two to fishers. It really hurts to lose em.

Pete,

Sorry to hear about Nasdaq, like you say tho, he's got a few more left, but hope they are few and far between. On a similar note,

We were sitting on the back patio having coffee Sat AM heard a noise in the woods - checked it out to find one of our Siamese hightailing it to the house fast as he could, with a coyote trying to climb over the deer fence I put up earlier this year.

We have about 20 acres woods and marsh between us and the ocean seems to be a good habitat for these guys, we now have indoor cats much to their displeasure.

Hope Nasdaq heals, and all is well soon.

I really like cats as pets, and I'm sorry to hear about your pet getting injured. Cats are a real catch22; they seem to be happier roaming around outside, but they live a lot longer when they stay inside. Raccoons can be a pretty fiece opponent for a cat, as well as coyotes (Im assuming you suspect a coyote attack). I like to observe cat behavior. They are truly amazing little animals when you put things in perspective. Pound for pound they are as tough as anything in the woods, with the advantage of being able to jump up to 5 times their own height. They are at the top of the list as hunters go; I seen my cats catch birds off the feeder. Snakes, mice, frogs, dragonflies, not many things are too fast for them. Cats have all these cool abilities, and still most guys I know think they are "sissy" pets. Again, sorry to hear about your little buddy getting hurt.

Sounds like he might of tangled with a fisher. Glad he is on the mend.
