A hognose will roll over and play dead like that. They are non-poisonous.

Not dead, this one faints like a Virginia opossum. Right after you grab it, it craps on you then passes out.

Yep, it's a hognose snake or puff adder. We would sometimes catch them when we were kids. They are a pretty neat snake. We always thought they didn't have any teeth as we played with them and none of us were ever bitten. A neighbor that lived a couple of blocks away told us to never hurt them as they were a very beneficial snake. Wikipedia Hognose - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia states that they do have teeth in the back of their mouth.

I love the way they will hood up like a cobra and hiss at you. They put on a ferocious show and then roll over and play dead. If you roll them upright, they'll roll belly up again. The last one I caught had me laughing so hard I was in tears. I took it out in the woods and let it go because I knew my wife (ex-wife) would make me kill it. That was back in the late '70s in Virginia. I don't think I've seen a live one since.
