Hi people, I just acquired a used Case ih 1455xl but I am used to operating small ih 744 tractors without cabs, no operator's mannual, and I suspect the clutch is faulty because pressing the clutch pedal has no effect on the moving tractor and gear can only be ingaged when I stop the engine. Then when I press the accelerator the tractor pulls away! can someone please help?

Welcome to TBN. It does sound like the clutch but it could be that the clutch is not working due to the linkage, does it have a slave cylinder to work the clutch or is it just linkage. Others will know more about that tractor. If you don't get your answer in this post repost in the Case HI forum Ed

Thanks for your effort. This tractor uses a cable link and the feel of the pedal when I press it is right.
Even the free play is fine. What I fear is opening up the tractor unnecessarily. Also when driving., I have to hold the speed shift gear lever in place while it is fighting to go to neutral.
I am sure someone out there has answers . Thank you all

Try over on Redpower, seems to me these tractors didn't have a "real" clutch in them, and could be start just by pushing the accelerator, sort of a torque convertor job.
