Mystery modulle, Quicksliver Keyless

On my B21, bought used, there is a rectangular black box that was plugged in under the instrument panel. As I worked on it over time, I ended up unplugging it, since none of the wires appeared connected to anything. Seems to operate fine.

Google is no help finding out what this is, or might have been doing, at one time. Says Quicksilver Keyless on it, model 87-830862A1, Division of Mercury Marine.

Looks like just what The Google says it is: keyless ignition system made by Mercury Marine. Lets one start <whatever> with a keypad. My guess is that a previous owner installed it.

Never found that picture. There is a keypad but is so badly deteriorated as to be useless.

Theft deterrent?

Was it a rental? Common for rental equipment to have keypads, no keys to lose and slightly better theft deterrent then the universal equipment keys.

If it was that was not disclosed by the seller.

They may not know depending on how many hands it's been passed through, seems a lot of the B series tlb's I find for sale are ex rentals, occasionally from a plumbing or electrical company etc.
