Received a note and pictures over at Farm Jeep from Ted, who had purchased one of the two plows pictured. The plows are branded American
Bantam, the same company that built the first WWII jeep prototype. The company located in Butler, PA is also known for its small cars. In the late 1940s, Bantam purchased Newgren Equipment for Monroe Auto. Newgren and Monroe sold 3 point lifts for the jeep and Newgren sold a line of implements marketed toward the Willys jeep. In the early 1950s, Bantam settled a lawsuit against Monroe for wrong doings in the Newgren deal. Bantam never recovered and was pretty much out of business by 1954 and had disappeared by 1956.

I've been working with a few collectors and the American Austin Bantam Club to learn more about these plows. We are in agreement that the plows are re-branded Newgren models. But none of us had ever seen an American Bantam plow before. Both plows where find in northern VA. We are researching a couple of questions and are hoping you all might be able to help. We would like to know when Bantam dropped the Newgren name and began branding the implements as American Bantam. We believe it to be in the 1948 to 1954 time range. Second we would like to know how many and what type of implements were sold under the Bantam label.

Very few paper records seem to exist from this time period for Bantam. We are continuing our research and would welcome any information you might have or suggested areas we might want to explore.

Thanks,

Always interesting to learn more about the Butler PA company...

I own both a 1933 and 1938 Bantams... tons of history... enough to make a movie on how the Jeep came into being... they also made military trailers after auto production ceased...

Don't know if you belong to the Bantam Club, but they have been extremely helpful and clearly interested in all aspects of the company history. Seems like a great organization.

I belong to the Austin Bantam Society... we welcome all Bantam related interests...

A few years back they had a huge pilgrimage and national convention at Butler... I was not able to attend.

A search of two newspaper sites I subscribe to yields a lot of ads in the 1940's and early 50's for their 1/2 ton utility trailer, both new and classified ads for used. Somewhat fewer for their cars, mostly classified ads to buy or sell used. There were a few articles about their deal to make snowplows under an arrangement with a British firm around 1952, and several about mergers and the sale of their plant for non-payment of Federal taxes. But I didn't find a one about plows.

Bantam purchased Newgren Equipment in 1948. The plows with the American Bantam tag, we believe, are Newgren plows with replaced tags. I would be interested in any Newgren Equipment ads you might come across. They are often paired with Willys Jeep ads.

Some follow-up news at out blog Farm Jeep: American Bantam Plow - More of the story. But here is the brief summary:

Bantam purchased Newgren from Monroe Auto in 1948 and started producing farm implements at the Butler, PA plant. Unfortunately, by early 1950, Newgren had pretty much ceased doing business. From the current evidence, it would appear that Bantam sold Newgren plows with their name on them sometime between late 1950 and 1954. Still more research to be done.

Thanks,
