1958 861D Ford Powermaster Diesel & 2016 Husqvarna YTA24V48
We took delivery of our new Husqvarna YTA24V48 riding mower this morning. It took Lowes a couple days to get it together to deliver. I did a lot of research before I settled on this brand and model. I also had to up our budget more than I intended originally, but that was because our last new garden tractor was bought back in 1991 and boy o boy was I in for some sticker shock when I first began looking. This one is not the hoss our old one was, but I got a Ford 861D tractor that can handle any of the heavy stuff I need to do now. This is mainly just a yard mower and occasionally pull the little dump cart.

This one has the fairly new (for Husqvarna) Automatic transmission with the foot peddles, that I read some pretty good stuff about. I hope it will prove to be dependable to haul my big butt around mowing.

Just a quick update to my thoughts on the new mower after the first day of mowing with it this morning. We have 3 adjoining lots now that I mow that are close to 2.5 acres. About half is wooded with many sticks and roots to mow over and crap to mow around, the other half is open field, but hilly. The 46" cut old garden tractor I mentioned hydro-tranny went out many years ago, and I have been using a cheap 38" cut riding mower since, but when we acquired the extra 2 lots in 2013, that cheap mower became less than adequate, but it got the job done although it took awhile. It was not unusual to spend 3 hours or more bouncing around on that thing every week. I even bought a 5’ rear finish mower for the tractor, but due to the obstacles in the yards, I was still forced to use the rider, so I seldom used it if I had to change attachments and just spent extra time on the rider.
So, today I mowed all three lots and went from 0 to 1.6 hours on the Husqvarna hour meter when I finished. I took me an hour and 45 minutes from the time I walked out the door and back into the AC this morning. So this has about cut my mowing time in half. So that is a definite big plus for me.
Operating the YTA24V48 took a little getting used to as I have never had a foot operated transmission like the General Transmission R800 before. While this does have a clutch & brake on the left side like I am used to, it gets used very little. I’m still getting used to not having to look down to find which peddle I need to mash. Overall, the speed and ease of use for the transmission is another plus. The mower also has a cruise control, so I do not have to hold the Go peddle down with my foot continuously. I should also mention, this thing will move along at a darn faster ground speed than any mower I have been on before, but only if you want to. Speed is very easy to control and it will happily creep along in old man speed also. If I stop on a hill, just releasing the right Go peddle will not stop the machine and requires the use of the left brake peddle. I have read other reviews that complained of the slow reverse speed which is about half of what top speed is in forward. I don’t think that will bother me much as I do not mow backwards much and until I get a little more used to this, the slower reverse is just fine with me.
The deck throws out dew wet grass at least as far as the deck is wide, so I did not have any windrows to steer by on my next pass like the little rider used to do.
Ride comfort was very little improved over the other mower, but a big plus for the retractable arm rests this Husqvarna has, as I am no longer sliding off sideways across the seat on steep hillsides when mowing. That other mower seat was slick as deer guts on a doorknob. Bigger tires could improve the ride over bumps in the ground I think.
This new mower also has a very tight turning radius advertised at 16”. My 38” mower would barely cut around our brick boarder in the grass around a Pin Oak in the front yard that is about 6 feet diameter. That helps to cut mowing time also, by not having to back up to turn tighter.
I have ordered a Husqvarna front brush guard/bumper to add to this as, all my other mowers and tractors that I have owned have had some kind of either homemade or factory bumper in front to protect the sheet metal and my superior driving skills facade. We are also thinking about buying/adding the bagger attachment. It sure is nice in the Fall, to mow up the leaves instead of raking them by hand.

Glad you like the new YTA. Son bought slightly used one last year from Lowe's and had some trouble getting Lowe's to repair it. Took 3 trips, but it looks like they finally took care of the problem. For the price, it looks like a good deal.

The forward/reverse speed is adjustable, but to increase one, you'd have to decrease the other. It's a delicate adjustment - I know :) I ended up with mine going faster in reverse than forward. However, the forward speed is faster than I'll ever mow, so I'm leaving it as it is. Instructions? Heck, I don't need no instructions :)

Congratulations;
I bought my YTH2448 in 2006, it now has 400 hour on it. I only had two problems with it-one is ethanol but I use additives now, 2-is I just had one of the throttle rods clean break at the 90 degree bend. I have a MIG so I welded it back together. Other than routine maintenance and blades-everything is original. All the belts are original:) I mow 1.5 acres of bumpy terrain weekly, use it to haul and have a mulching kit and three bin bagger. Still cuts awesome....and looks like new :)

It is good to hear some (mostly) positive experiences with this mower. I could have bought the 2 or 3 year extended warranty from Lowes, but I thought to myself, how much can go wrong with a mower that I could not fix myself other than something catastrophic like engine or transaxle failure. We only bought from Lowes, because they had the best price and free delivery. I have always had good luck with Briggs engines, but took the warning about the ethanol fuel to heart and found a local BP station that does not sell fuel with any ethanol in it where I will buy my fuel from from now on. That will be good for my old truck too. However, I am new to the RS800 from General Transmissions, but read many good reviews about them. The slow reverse is not an issue for me so far, as I do not back up nearly as much with this mower as I did with my other little mower that had such a huge turning radius. I looked at lower priced Husqvarna with a 46" deck before we decided on this one, but noticed it did not have grease fittings on the spindles, so I felt having those on this 48" deck would help extend the life of the deck. I got my brush guard bumper installed recently and will soon mow with it for the second time. My hope is this mower (even with maintenance and minor repairs over the years) will last until I'm too old (or too dead) to do our yard work anymore. It is simple enough to drive, that my wife can use it too, although I can count on one hand the number of times in 25 years she has mowed our yard.

MichelleB, glad you bought the bumper. I have the same bumper. It's stout - I usually just hook my cherry picker to it to lift it up when want to do something underneath. And yeah, it already has some battle scars; I'm not that good of a driver.

I'm wondering - what is the difference in a YTA model and the YTH?

And, Husqvarna moving up to the General Transmissions from the K46 TorqTuff is a major improvement.

I don't think you'll have any regrets with the BS engine. I was able to get the Kawasaki motor in mine, but would have no qualms with the BS. Now... if it were a Tecumseh, I'd have to walk away :)

I also plan to hook my cherry picker to the bumper to raise it up enough to change/sharpen the blades when the time comes. Web site says it is not to be used to pull the mower if it gets stuck, but it seems pretty stout to me.

The A model is the General Transmission (Automatic) and the H stands for the hydrastatic. Biggest difference I think is the automatic is supposed to be simpler and easier to work on if need be. Basically a variable speed belt drive by way of variable diameter pulleys. I'm not really sure if it will out last or out pull the new hydrostatics, but I read more good reports on the Automatics in other brand mowers online than I did the hydrostatic transaxles.

I had a Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 motorcycle, so I am very fond of their products and would venture to guess that engine is a step up from Briggs, but to me Briggs have always been simple and dependable engines Like my old Ford tractor. I'm not a Tecumseh fan either. I can remember my father telling me in the 60s when he bought our first Sears Suburban riding mower to never buy anything with a Tecumseh engine, so I may be prejudice.

Well (I hope) good news and (definitely) some bad news. The hopefully good news is we bought the 3 year extended warranty from Lowes just under the deadline in time. The really bad news is the third time I began mowing with the new Husqvarna something in the GO peddle broke and now it just flops around. The mower will not go forward or reverse. Naturally, this happened at the furthest distance from my home at the bottom of a hill on the back side of our lot after making a single pass mowing, so pushing it back to the house was not an option for me. I ended up going around the block with my old truck and trailer, sweating in the sun loading it up to bring it back around to my little barn/shop area.

I figure the linkage is screwed up or disconnected, but it seems to lie inside the frame and even with a mirror, I could not see with my one good eye the linkage or where it was messed up at. Looks like the deck will need to come off and the mower raised up in the air to get under it.
BAD_8942.JPG
Then I got the idea to try to take a picture with my camera from under the mower as best I could, but that was not any help either.
BAD_8952.JPG
But during the course of all this, I noticed the plastic cover over the L/S mowing deck spindle has some melted areas where something has been rubbing against it that did not look right. Like maybe the spindle was wobbling and the belt pulley rubbing the plastic.

So here I am frustrated with grass to mow, a brand new useless $2k mower, waiting until next week before they will come get it and hopefully fix it for free. Wishing now I still had my little Bolens rider that I sold a few weeks ago. Not sure how long my grass will wait though. I may have to service and attach my old finish mower to my 58 Ford tractor to mow down the largest areas before this Hunk-a-crapa mower is returned working.

Had a similar problem and t may be the same as yours, about three weeks ago I went into reverse and nothing, forward nothing, peddle just flops around. My first problem in 400 hours :( I found the linkage rod from the peddle to the transmission has a clean brake on the 90 degree bend at the transmission. its held on both ends by a washers and cotter pins. Easy to take off and put on. Dealership did not have the part on hand and I had to wait a week but I have a MIG welder and welded it back together. Its been good ever since-sounds like you have the same issue.
