Closing the sliding side door on her mini van today, my wife cut the end (from below the finger nail by the knuckle) off her right hand ring finger.
She closes the door sort of like (a right handed) back hand in tennis. Her hand slipped off the handle and smacked against the door jam and the door slammed shut on it. I heard a scream, a brief pause, and then, "My finger tip is gone!"
We were on our way to my sons track meet when this happened.

My daughter and I ran back into the house to get a cold wet cloth and a bucket of ice along with a ziplock baggie to put her finger tip in. When we got outside my wife picked up her finger tip and placed it into the baggie. I put her in my car and turned on my hazards immediately and sped off. A normal 25 minute drive was done in about 15 minutes to the hospital. (can you say speeding!/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) We checked in and they took her right away. The nurse put her on IV and then gave her some morphine. They called in their Plastic Surgeon and after about a 1/2 hour wait he arrived. The doctor reattached it but said that the tip of the finger doesn't have any blood vessels in it (which makes it much harder for it to reattach); that he did all that he could do and to just hope for the best. If it doesn't take, she'll obviously lose the tip and have to undergo skin grafts /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. We're home now and she is trying to relax. We have a follow up next Friday if there are no complications before then. Now I'm not superstitious, but this happened on Friday the 13th. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Sorry to hear that. It sounds like she was lucky - 1) as serious as it was, it could could easily have been much worse and 2) she wasn't alone. Keep us posted and best wishes.

Our best wishes to her for a speedy recovery. I know that had that been my wife, I would have been picking her up off the ground if she saw a finger tip missing. Your wife has to be a strong woman not to have fainted when she saw that it was gone. You did all the correct things, and now it is a matter of just waiting. Once again..... best wishes for a speedy recovery.... Junk.....

Gerard,

Sorry to hear about your wife. That is something you would have never had thought would have happened. And yes it could have been worse so hang in there. You will have to put all of your work aside and help her out, you know, do the cooking, laundry and all that good stuff.

How unlucky can you get???? I'm glad you were there to help out. Your wife must be one tough lady. I hope everything goes well for her.

Gerard,
I'm sorry to hear of your wife's accident, and hope that she is resting comfortably.
I know I'd much rather have it be my finger than my wife's. I deal with my own accidents better than those of loved ones.
Something about Friday the 13ths that make them easy to remember. I hope all turns out well.
