I'll miss hearing him crowing in the morning... and watching Ruger chase him around the yard. Yet winter's coming and the hen's need their feathers.

Not much meat on him anyways for the amount of feed he was eating! ;-)

Talkin about roosters........

A little silver-haired lady calls her neighbor and says, "Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get started."

Her neighbor asks, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?"

The little silver haired lady says, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster."

Her neighbor decides to go over and help with the puzzle.

She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table.

He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says,

"First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster."

He takes her hand and says, "Secondly, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea, and then," he said with a deep sigh ............
Lets put all the Corn Flakes back in the box.

Now I know what you mean about missing his crowing... Our Rooster Barney used to come and sit on a tree branch just off our front porch every morning and crow for at least an hour...then something ate him and no more Barney...I still miss him....By the way we did not buy him...he just showed up one morning and stayed...we put feed down for him everyday and he lasted about 8 mos. or so..

When we bought our current home in town, I frequently heard a rooster crowing, somewhere in the block south of us. Of course I didn't think anything about it, and a rooster crowing sure doesn't bother me. I grew up hearing roosters crowing in the morning and kind of like that sound. However, 2 little girls (maybe as much as 10 years old) came knocking at the door one day with a petition they were trying to get people to sign asking that they be allowed to keep their pet rooster. I looked up the city ordinance and found that if 3 people complain about a rooster crowing or a dog barking, the animal's owner could be fined. I never heard the rooster crow again, so I have to assume they got rid of it.

But now we have a "Unified Development Code" that I seriously doubt any of the council members read before passing it, but among other things, it says you can keep hens for pets, but no roosters in the city.

One of our neighbors roosters got loose and has been living in our woods near the barn. We have taking to calling him and he comes out for scratch feed. He is scared of the horses, but we are trying to get him into the barn before winter. We'll add him to our barred rocks in time. I hear him every morning- love that sound. Our old barred rock rooster was a pain. He'd attack, I'd grab him and carry him around for 20 minutes under my arm. He'd be good for 3 days! Something got him one day.
Then our chickens once again had feathers on their backs and on their heads! When we got our last batch of chicks, we skipped the rooster. Besides it was awkward when my wife's catholic sister-in-law would ask if the eggs were fertilized...being against her grain to eat a fertilized egg!

I started this thread on a whim... thanks for the response.

The victim of my axe was actually very docile and a nice New Hampshire Red rooster... I just got tired of seeing my hens with no feathers. It was quite comical though, to watch my male lab chase him across the yard... Ruger learned very quickly that chasing was acceptable but NOT to harm the chickens.

As much as I enjoy hearing a rooster crow I can see where they can be as obnoxious as a barking dog...

Here Cape Elizabeth asked to settle rooster dispute | Local News - Home is a case where the neithbors are trying to silence a rooster.

I have a chocolate lab named Ruger too.

Popular breed, popular name.
His previous owner named him "Harley"... when I took him in I needed a name fast to put on the paperwork at the vet's office.

If I'd had time to think when I got him his name might be Hansel... as in Hansel must be fed!
He was a year old at the time and had spent his first year on a chain, foraging for his food. He weighed 63 lbs and you could see every rib on his body... I couldn't bear to run my hand down his back because I could feel every vertebrae. :( He also had lungworm which my vet informed me is from licking slug trails; nay, eating slugs was one way that he stayed alive until a coworker got tired of seeing him tied out all winter, 24/7.

Oops, this was meant to be a light hearted thread... time to step off from my soapbox. ;)

My rooster story;my father always had chickens, ducks, turkeys ect.We were up to his place and his big white leghorn rooster attacked one of the grandchildren, big mistake.Dad got mad and hit him in the head with a shovel handle and buried him in the manure pile in back of the barn.
He later told me;two days later that rooster came back(to life) and was in the barnyard! He didn't have the heart to kill him again.

My question is... Did he ever attack the grandkids again? ;)
