Finally got the shots that a crop duster took of our farms in the spring , Larger one is our main yard and smaller one is where i live . One of the shots is a bush clearing job that we are doing 49 acres .

That is Flatland. I've driven thru the area a few times and am always amazed at the vista of flatness.:D :D

The trip down and out of the coulee at Menadosa is always interesting.:D :D

Ya'll sure like things straight up there. Guess with no hills, no curves.

Nice shots.

The trees around your "main yard" and house are sure a stark contrast to the flat cultivated land. When the wind blows snowdrifts in the winter, does it pile up around the tree line? How about dust storms? The last shot shows a lot of timber down. Is that deadfall or cut timber? Those are interesting shots. Does the crop duster take photos to supplement his income from dusting?BTW: That farm looks pretty darn nice. I'm sure that when the trees are green it's like an oasis in the middle of all that land.

Mornin D7E,
Really interesting shots ! Ill bet those trees around the homestead payoff durring a blizzard ! :) You are trully surrounded by your work ! ;) Im wondering if you ever have any flooding problems durring the spring thaw due to all that flatness ? Thanks again !

Scotty,
Maybe D7E can tell us about the moat they built around, I think it was Winnepeg, for flooding.
I've been to Winnepeg and on to Steinbach twice, nice people up there. Talk about cold winters with blowing snow, wow!

Thanks D7. Great shots. How much land total, and what do you raise?

We farm around 1400 acres of soy beans, oats canola and sunflowers on very heavy black clay ,Although it is like a pool table we don't "flood" ,water can sit 6 inches deep in spring thaw but only till dykes thaw and can be gone in 5-10 days , Every 5 miles or so is a big ditch up to 15 feet deep and if bad enough they run the snow out of them with a D8 and V plough ,Blowing snow is my worst problem so any bluffs of trees are removed to let snow blow on by and not build up around field edges causing wet places in spring . All yards have trees around ,at least on north side to stop cold north wind , Can be -45 wind chill. Clearing job you see is my winter project ,For many reasons ,Create more land, reduce snow build-up ,Extra income the lumber you see is piled is for my firewood business (up to 200 cords split and delivered each year ).
As for the winnipeg floodway ,I've only been here 10 years so i'm not really qualified to give it's history but it is an awesome piece of engineering ,The red river is prone to flooding and runs right through the city but we are an hour away so it does'nt affect us too bad ,There is a big expansion job in operation on the floodway right now but it is tiny in contrast to the original job all those years ago

D7E, My grandma born in 1885 God rest her soul, was born and raised in farm country in Wisconsin. When we would be out for a drive in the car on country roads she would look at a farm where they had a big barn or a lot of silos and a smaller house and then she would say, "Well the man wears the pants in that family look at how big his barn is."

When I saw your pics with all those silos I had this sudden flashback to what my grandma used to say. So I guess you msut wear the pants in your family, judging by how many silos i saw :)
