Hey guys!

I am new to this forum and fairly new to tractors heh.
When we bought out property we got an old 434 Diesel with it, its had a few tire issues but nothing serious until now. It seems that I am stuck in reverse. If I put the tractor into a forward gear it just bogs down and shuts off. It seems that this is a fairly common issue just from searching for fixes online but nothing that makes sense with my model.
If there is a post that has already covered this maybe someone could link it, sorry if I've spammed an over covered topic :)

Thanks

You will need to remove the top of the transmission that contains the shifter. You will see the slots in the two shifter rails that the shift lever operate. Make sure the tractor is on level ground with no load on the transmission. move the shift rails until they are opposite each other. Place the shift lever in the slots and replace the trans top. Be careful to shift by going to neutral and across to another gear. The shift lever is worn causing the problem

Thanks gene,

I did take the shifter out, I will try to post a pic of it. It doesn't look too bad compared to some. I removed the bolts from the top of the transmission case and realized that there are hydraulic hose that are in the way. I guess I have to remove those? :(

All good stuff here! The reason that this happened is as he said that the shift lever is worn on the end and when it is apart it is the perfect time to do a replacement or adjustment with welding a grinding.

What has happened is just wear, it's not unusual! For some it happens quicker then others.

The original shift pattern is a modified H pattern which is very common for standard transmissions. Whats happened is the ball on the bottom of the shifter has worn so that it has slipped out of one of the shift rail slots. All things in a perfect world we would not have tried to slide shift it and always made a perfect H shift. To just line it back up and install the shifter again still leaves the chance for it to do it again! It normally happens with an unfamilar operator first!

I know I don't seem to have enough time to begin with!
