NH TN65
Hello all. First time poster here and tractor owner as well.
I recently bought a NH TN65. I have researched some post here to find any info or opinions regarding this unit as It is my first tractor ever.
The first week I had it the starter went out. Started fine and was running day before and the next went out and simply wouldnt engage or turnover. It is getting rebuilt right now and I will be putting it back on this Friday.
I have located several plates on it on the ROP support and the fender wells an dhave many numbers from off of it. In reading here today it seems I may need to look on a placard mounted on the transmission on the left side as I am trying to figure out the year.
Mostly got this to do some bushhogging (12-15 ac) and some planting of mostly food plots, some corn and so forth. Scraping the drive and other misc property management. No heavy farming right now.
I was told by the starter guy that judging by my starter, mine has a fiat engine compared to the perkins?????
Just trying to get some advise of generic info, opinions, suggestions and pointers.
I see alot of great communication and wisdom on other post and apologize if there are other write ups on this specific model that I may have overlooked, thanks in advance.

gonna be putting my starter back on when I get home tomorrow night. hate to sound stupid but does anyone know where I could find a diagram of the wiring?
I know which post the lead from the battery goes to but for the life of me I am not sure which post I tool the pother wire from. I would hate to burn it up soon as I put it back on. Any help would be appreciated.

thank ya sir. I am a few hours away myself from the tractor but if I remember correct the direct lead from battery goes to the outer post on mine but I cant remember for nothing which post the smaller gauged wire went to that feeds the rest of the tractor.
wanting to say the inner post that has the jumper wire going to starter but dont want to mess it up after just having it rebuilt...which is my luck..haha!!

and then praying it will start this time and that the starter definately was the problem.

Thanks again

Kurly, Welcome! Congratulations on your new tractor. I have had my TN65 for about 5 yr now, and I love it. Funny about your starter issue as I had not had mine more than a week when I striped the teeth off my starter. I didn't wait for it to stop turning before I hit the starter a second time. They don't like that. :( Anyway now that yours is "broken in", you should be well pleased. Great all round utility tractor. I run a 6' and a 8' Bush Hog, and a 7' Woods finish mower with mine. Other than the 8' Bush Hog making the front end quite light, it is quite capable machine with all 3 mowers. Mine has loader, and makes it pretty heavy for finish work, but bush hog's with no problems.
Looks like you have your starter wiring answer by now, but if you still need information, let me know and I will check my manual for ya.
Remember: Post a pic and let us see what you have, or now will believe ya.

Good morning and many THANKS for the replies. I did get the starter put back on last night and went with my memory (dangerous). did check the starter before putting it on and it worked fine. Put it on, turned the key and no response from starter. Guessing it is a relay or power getting to the celenoid. crossed the celenoid with a spare wire and she fired right up. this tells me that my started may have been fine from the get go and I actually burnt it up trying to get it running last weekend....:D. good to hear it running none the less.
Will be studying the sticky on sherpas post and go from there.

I do hear a relay clicking behind the cluster when I turn the key, wondering if the relay is bad would it make the clicking noise or does it click when its good and working?

gonna try to order me an owners/operating manual today but in the meantime thinking I should be able to rev the PTO when not operating the tractor in forward with the gas pedal? If i am sitting idle and engage the pto and it spins, should I be able to make it spin faster without the tractor moving?

guess I didn't need to tell yawl this is my first tractor...ha....looking forward to learning everything and having fun with this thing. heading out today to do some bush hogging and disking just me and the daughter.....so wish me luck that I don't tear up too much more before sun down!!!!

Thanks again.....will post pics once the lil lady gets home next week

Good that you got your starter back and in.

As for the PTO....I am not familiar at all with your model, but (I am assuming here) there is usually a hand throttle or maybe a throttle lock somewhere where you can slowly increase the engine RPM to the right spped to match the attachments required PTO speed.

A lot of tillers and bush hogs require the PTO to spin at 540 RPM, and that means the engine would be up near 2000 rpm or so. (Mine is about 2200 engine RPM) And some may have a lighted indicator on the dash or painted indicator on the tach showing where to rev to to get the pto at speed

So, I would look for a lock or hand throttle somewhere and go from there.

And this desired RPM should , in my opinion, be raised and lowered when starting and stopping the attachment. You do not want to just push in the clutch or shut off the engine if the pto is racing at 540. It will / could damage the internal pto brake.

You may have a bad Neutral Safety switch which is preventing you from starting. It would be like leaving the tractor in gear or the PTO engaged if the switch goes bad.

The PTO speed is indicated on the rpm gage. It will spin according to the RPM's your running at. Ground speed won't matter, only engine RPM's.
