Kubota B21
I recently purchased an older version of the B21 tractor, I haven't had the serial number checked by a dealer but from the looks it appears probably the late 90's. I got it for a steal. It has 1100hr on the meter, front loader, backhoe, 2 spare hoe buckets, box grader, trailer hitch, woods 48" finish mower, and bush hog. The only thing I realy want now is a Tiller. I got it from a guy I have worked with and or around for the past 15 years. Partial traded a decent kids dirtbike and $6,400 and I drug it all home with me. So, a little background on myself. I work as a Millwright/welder and have always been big into hotrods and drag racing. So with that said I do have some equipment operation background and understand hydraulic systems and diesel engines well. I am also a pretty accomplished mechanic and welder. As for personal heavy equipment a Ford 8N is probably the biggest I have ever personally owned. So I am excited to get to work with the new B21 even though its a midget compared to what alot of you own for personal use. I have a 5 acre property with tons of trees. several trees in the yard need removed due to root rot and some from beetle kill. Also my gravel driveway is always in need of attention being its probably 250' long and opens into a 25X40' parking area. Not to mention I live in Illinois and snow will no longer be my enemy. I may actually get excited the next time it snows knowing I get to go play on the tractor.

Anyway so to the B21 current condition.

The problems:

-Two hydraulic lines are leaking at threads. Easy fix
-Needs new seat
-Tie rod/ stearing link on left side needs replaced
-The fuel shutoff solenoid is missing. Someone put a plug in the spot it is suppose to be. So right now the only way to shut the tractor off is to get off and then manually move the lever to shut fuel off. This is definitely the worst of the issues on the tractor considering it has safety concerns regarding having to get off the running tractor to shut it down no matter if I am in a situation where I like that idea or not. So I will address this issue first.
-Oil and filter need changed (engine)
-Air filter needs replaced badly. Also the hose from the air box to the intake. The hose begins it collapse under extended heavy use partially due to the air filter being in bad shape and the hose being worn out.

So My first question to the forums would be, aside from the list I just stated above, what else should I look at? Or what can I expect from a 20 year old 1100hr tractor like this one? Lastly as for the tiller, what is a good tiller that will not break the bank for me for this B21? The PTO output shaft has no play in it, tires look good, bucket arms and loader arms don't have any play in the connection points that I would call excessive, fuel pump and injectors just went through a cleaning and inspection process at a local diesel shop, hyd oil and filters have been replaced in the past year and fluid looks very clean.

I appreiate any opinions or any comments that are made. Very excited to get out in the dirt and play. I have been spending the past several days reading some of the posts on the site and decided to make my own!

First off, welcome to the TBN and congrats on the B21, they are solid units. It sounds like you'll have her back to fighting shape in no time. It mostly sounds like basic maintenance issues besides the stop solenoid, which hopefully is a fairly simple fix by just replacing the missing one with a new one. Try to find an operators manual, it will serve you well as well as getting a work shop manual.

Congratulations on your new tractor. Don't forget to get a parts manual when you can. Like most mechanics I probably use a parts manual more than a WSM - but have both & operator's too. It does sound like you got a really good deal on a tractor that needs all the basic maintenance. With any luck it hasn't needed it long enough to damage itself. Probably OK; they are tough....especially the old ones. I bet you find a lot of uses for it. Wonderful lifetime machines....

Congrats on your new machine and welcome to TBN! As rScotty says the manuals get you through most of the things you will need to do and you can find them on line too and Dave 7040 offered the WSM too!

You have a strong little machine that will do a lot of work for you and you got a great deal. I would clean the air filter asap even if it means blowing it out until you get a new one.

A few things - check under the tractor where there is a sleeve for the front drive shaft - this can come loose and it will wrap grass and otherstuff around it. Grease - there are fittings under the tractor for the forward/reverse pedal - lube these up if it doesn't return to neutral.

Build a BH dolly - get two furniture dollies 12x24" and make a platform - then you can roll the BH away for storage and roll back for connection time.

Get a thumb for your BH - or since you are a welder - make one they are pretty basic and a back saver too. I use mine for everything from cutting firewood to hauling brush (in lieu of a grapple) and picking / placing rocks etc.

As far as a tiller - unless you are doing a large garden every year I just use my BH to dig up an area and I have a older walkbehind tiller that does the rest.

Operating aspects, I generally run at 15-1700 RPM for most work unless I really need the power - most of the time this suffices and keeps the BH movement a little slower.

Find a used 6' back blade - they are great for moving snow in the winter too. Best of luck with your repairs and you will enjoy this unit for a long time.

Thank you all for your reply's and advice! So a little update on what I have gotten done so far.

-Replaced the engine oil and filter
-Replaced two hyd hoses that were cracking
-Re threaded two hoses that were leaking at fittings
-Bought and installed new air filter and inlet hose
-Cleaned up some wiring for the lights on the tractor. Did not mention this in the first post. All the lights on the tractor are missing or do not work.
-Bought but have yet to install two LED light bars.
-Greased everything that I could find!
-Replaced the seat

So, I still need to address the fuel shut off solenoid. Hoping its not something more than just installing a new one. I expect there will be more to it though as thats just how my luck goes for most things. I now have the operators manual, WSM, and parts manual. I have ran the tractor a little bit in the past month that I have had it. Cleaned up a few trees and removed two stumps. It has ran extremely well and has not given me a single issue so far. Going to hook up the box blade this weekend and see how well it works cleaning up my gravel driveway. I also started working on building a hydraulic thumb for the BH. I have taken several pics along the way and once I get finished and all the bugs worked out I will do a write up on how I did everything. So far I just make templates of some of the parts and brackets and cut them out on the waterjet at work the other day. I also have the cylinder that im going to use. Thanks again to everyone who has posted on this thread!

Congratulations on a great tractor. Much heavier duty than a CUT ag tractor. Piranha bar really helps with FEL digging and brush removal. Enjoy!

Thanks Bullbreaker - yes these little machines are tough - that pic was 400 hours, now has 600 hours but still looks the same. I keep it inside and just grease and change oil and filters. I waxed once in 18 years - like my zero turn I blow it off after working with it and wash it off once a year.

Glad to hear your B21 is working well Chevy79 - I am sure you will enjoy it for many hours and looking forward to seeing your thumb set up!
